Oliver Ramirez scored twice in a span of 33 seconds, including the game-winning goal, to lead the Colorado College men's soccer team to a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Christopher Newport Saturday at Stewart Field.
Â
The Tigers (4-2-1) struck first in the seventh minute when
Alexander Ward converted a penalty kick after Ramirez was taken down in the box by CNU's Ben Stefanon. CC held the 1-0 lead at halftime, despite Ward's PK being its only shot in the first 45 minutes.
Â
Ramirez extended the lead at the 58:43 mark with his third goal of the season. He took a pass from
Teddy Libby just outside the box, made a move to the right past CNU keeper Hayden Dewey and put a shot into the open net.
Â
Just 33 seconds later, Ramirez streaked towards the net, took a pass from
Rex Karjian in front of the net, gathered the ball and flicked a shot over Dewey just under the crossbar.
Â
The Captains (5-1-1), who received votes this week in the latest NCAA Division III rankings after being ranked 14
th in the nation, rallied to cut the lead to one after Alex Stall scored a pair of goals within 52 seconds of each other, both assisted by Andrew McWhinney.
Â
Colorado College held on for the final 20 minutes, allowing just two total shots and none on target. Goalie
Jasper Broad made two saves for the Tigers, while Dewey made one, as did Dom Stumpo, who replaced Dewey in the 67
th minute.
Â
CNU outshot the Tigers, 10-7, but CC held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Â
"We definitely did it the hard way, but I'm proud of the resiliency we showed the last 15 minutes of the game," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "CNU is more than capable of a deep NCAA tournament run, so to beat a team of their caliber is a confidence booster for our group. It's a quick turnaround, though, so we will need to refocus in the morning and be at our best for the Santa Cruz game."
Â
The Tigers host UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m.
