Tigers Take Two During SCAC Crossover

On the first day of league play in its own gym, the Colorado College women's volleyball team won both of its matches Saturday, defeating Austin College in the opening match before winning in three over Centenary in the afternoon.

In its first match, CC won in exciting fashion with a 3-1 victory over Austin College, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21.

The Tigers won the first set, outhitting the visitors, .149 to .021. The two sides were point for point early on but rallies of five and six points gave CC a 21-13 lead. Despite two late comebacks by the Roos, the Tigers held on for the win.

A five-point rally early in the second set gave the Tigers a big enough lead that Austin College was never able to get much closer than three and fell to a two-set deficit.

The third set of the match proved problematic for CC as the Roos played tough and never allowed the Tigers to build up a big lead. Austin College recorded four of the last five points in the set to win its first of the match.

The fourth set had the Roos building off its win in the third and leading by as much as three early on. The Tigers rallied multiple times and finally took the lead at 20-18. The two teams traded a set of side-outs before CC built up its lead to four and won the match.

Carolyn Dormady and Keeley Kandziora each recorded a double-double as Dormady had 18 kills and 18 digs and Kandziora had 13 digs and 16 digs. Jenny Jenks led both sides with 45 sets.

In the second match of the day against Centenary, CC won easily in three sets, 25-16, 25-16, 25-11.

The Tigers took the first set handily with Dormady serving four straight points to put the home team up by as much as 10 en route to the win.

The second set saw several service aces and some big kills by CC before Centenary called a timeout to regroup. The Ladies then notched four straight points and two big blocks but it wasn't enough as the Tigers took the victory.

The third set was all CC from beginning to end. The Tigers led by as much as 20-6 before closing the match out.

Coco Barton led CC with 10 kills while Jenks was the leader with 20 assists. The Tigers had eight blocks to Centenary's four and a .500 hitting percentage to the Ladies .092.

"We competed at a high level today," head coach Sharon Dingman said. "Our setters, Jenny (Jenks) and Annie (Steger), controlled the court and ran a very good offense. It was a fun day to be a Tiger."

CC returns to action at home on Sunday, Oct. 1, with a 10 a.m. match against the University of Dallas and then will close out the day with a 12:15 p.m. start time against 10th-ranked Trinity. CC's three seniors, Jenks, Kandziora and Izzy Lipacis, will be honored following the Trinity match.
