17th-Ranked Tigers Fall to Minnesota Duluth in Overtime

Ben Steeves scored 1:06 into overtime Friday night to give Minnesota Duluth a 3-2 victory over 17th-ranked Colorado College at Amsoil Arena in Duluth, Minn.

Stanley Cooley scored a pair of third-period goals for CC (10-8-1, 4-5-0 NCHC), including one with 1:45 remaining in the third period as the Tigers had an extra attacker on the ice that evened the score at 2-2. This was the second two-goal game of Cooley's career, both coming against the Bulldogs.

After a scoreless first period in which the Tigers outshot UMD, 13-7, the Bulldogs took the lead 4:42 into the second period. Jack Smith took a shot from the side boards that hit the far post and went in the net behind CC goaltender Kaidan Mbereko.

Owen Gallatin doubled the lead for the home team at the 2:23 mark of the third period with another shot from the side boards that went over Mbereko's left shoulder.

Cooley cut the lead to 2-1 at the 6:55 mark when he scored his second goal of the season by putting the puck past UMD goalie Zach Stejskal through a scrum in front of the net. Then, with less than two minutes remaining in the third, he deflected a shot from the point by Chase Foley past Stejskal for the equalizer.

Steeves scored the game-winner during a 2-on-1 rush and placed a wrister past Mbereko from the slot to improve UMD's record to 7-9-4 and 3-5-1 in the NCHC. Colorado College and Minnesota Duluth are now tied with Omaha for fifth in the league standings with 11 points.

UMD outshot the Tigers, 36-35, led by a game-high six from Steeves. Max Burkholder paced the Tigers with a career-high five. Mbereko and Stejskal each finished with 33 saves.

The Tigers were excellent on the dot Friday night, winning 43 of 64 faceoffs, good for a 67.2 percentage. Neither team converted on the power play, with UMD going 0-for-5, while CC was 0-for-3.

The teams will battle again on Saturday, Jan. 13, beginning at 6 pm. (MT).
