For the second game in a row, the Tigers played overtime basketball on the road in Texas. This time, the Colorado College men's basketball team prevailed 77-70 over the University of Dallas on Sunday, Jan. 14.
Before Friday against Austin College, CC had not played an overtime game since Jan. 6, 2023. They won against Southwestern 79-78. On Sunday against the Crusaders, the Tigers were down by 14 points with 13 minutes left to play in regulation and came back to win.
"Huge team win! Our guys were so gutsy today, I couldn't be more proud of them," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "After a heartbreaking loss on Thursday, we were down 13 points, and things are looking bleak today. The guys dug deep and put forth a selfless and courageous effort in every aspect of the game. Only then did we find ourselves in an eerily similar situation to Friday, giving up a late lead and going to OT."
CC came from behind to go up 59-58 with 5:45 left to play, and both teams battled to a tie at the end of the second half. Dallas hit a three-pointer with less than a second left to tie the game 66-66.
Devin Philio led the Tigers with a career-high 15 points, eight rebounds and a block. The Aurora native scored all his points in the second half and overtime.
Asher Nofziger led the bench with 12 points and three boards. The CC bench outscored Dallas' bench 43-11.
Edgar Romero and Russell Macfarlane combined for 14 points, four rebounds and a steal.
Dallas was led by Jack Boyle, who scored 22 points in the first half alone but was held to 1-6 shooting the rest of the game. CC didn't shoot the basketball great in the second half, only making 36.67 shots from the floor, but they held Dallas to 30.00 percent in the second half and 16.67 in OT.
The Tigers in OT shot 42.86 percent and were 5-6 from the charity stripe to seal the victory.
"Our guys responded with tremendous toughness probably playing 5 of our best defensive minutes of the season," Conarroe said.
It was a 40-34 Dallas lead at the halftime break; the Crusaders worked their lead out to as many as 14 with 13:17 left in the half. CC scored 13 straight points and finally regained the lead thanks to an
Adrian Price layup with 5:45 left.
The Tigers maintained the lead until the last second when Zac Olmsted drilled the game-tying three-pointer to force OT.
In extra time, Dallas nailed two free throws to make it 68-70, but back-to-back buckets from Philio and Price swung the advantage to CC's favor and the Tigers didn't lose it for the remainder of the game. The Tigers made five free throws to cap the 77-70 win, and CC improved to 8-7 (4-4 SCAC) on the season.
CC's road trip continues to California next weekend to take on UC Santa Cruz on Thursday, Jan. 18.
