Tigers Finish Road Trip With Fifth Straight Win As Romero Scores Season-High 20 Points

The Colorado College men's basketball team began their longest road trip on the season on Jan. 12. On Sunday in Seguin, TX, the Tigers wrapped up six consecutive games away from Colorado Springs and will return with five straight wins.

Against the Bulldogs of Texas Lutheran, Edgar Romero scored a season-high 20 points to lead CC to a 62-58 win. CC improves to 12-7 (6-4) on the season and is 6-3 away from Reid Arena. It is the most road wins the Tigers have had in a season since 2013-14, when they finished 8-5 on the road.

"I'm just really proud of our guys," head coach Jeff Conarroe said. "TLU was playing very well coming in and this has been a long road trip. But it's been great for us in a lot of ways. We are showing a lot of humility and courage. Different guys are stepping up in their roles and making big plays for us. Off the court, it's similar; it's a special group. It's fun to watch and be a part of right now and watch the program grow in every way."

Romero was electric from three-point range, matching a career-high five made three-pointers as CC finished the game shooting 38.1 percent from long range. Romero added two steals in only 17 minutes on the floor.

The Tigers shot the ball significantly well in the first half while also stepping up on defense, limiting the Bulldogs to only 33.3 percent shooting going into the break. Romero was 3-3 from deep in the first half; his first came with 9:46 to play, putting CC up 18-13.

CC would only build from there, building their lead to 10 with 7:07 to play, thanks to back-to-back threes made by Dinari Boykin and Romero. The Tigers made five long-range shots in the first.

The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 29-27 in the second half but made only three free throws. CC kept out of foul trouble in the late minutes and limited their turnovers, surrendering only 6.5 per half while forcing TLU's 19 turnovers.

Despite being down at the half, TLU overcame the deficit and retook the lead with 12:03 to play. CC regained the advantage shortly after with 9:45 to play when Romero knocked down another three-pointer to put the Tigers in front 47-44.

CC didn't surrender the lead for the remainder of the game. The contest came to within one possession in the final minute. Boykin drilled a clutch jumper inside the paint to make it 59-54. TLU responded with a bucket of their own. However, both Boykin and Scott Ruegg were on the receiving end of foul calls and made three of four shots at the charity stripe to ice the game.

Boykin finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds and a steal. Ruegg had five points, one board, three assists and two steals. Trey Crawford led the Tigers in boards with six, along with his four points, a block and a steal.

CC will return home to host Centenary on Friday, Feb. 2, at 5:30 p.m. inside Reid Arena. The Tigers are currently third in the SCAC standings with six games remaining in the regular season before the SCAC Tournament.

"I'm grateful to be a part of this fine group of men," Conarroe said. "They deserve all the credit, consistently exemplifying what it means to be a Colorado College Tiger, we all should be proud. I'm looking forward to next weekend; it's a big weekend, and we hope to see the CC community in force."

The Tigers will host St. Thomas on Feb. 4, who is currently second in the standings with an 8-2 conference record.
