Meyerhoff's Goal Lifts No. 4 Tigers Over No. 24 Pirates

The No. 4 Colorado College men's soccer team won a battle of ranked teams in a 1-0 victory over No. 24 Southwestern. The Tigers scored on a penalty kick in the 65th minute and defensively continued their dominance, earning their sixth-consecutive shutout.

Alex Meyerhoff, a senior from Atlanta, GA, scored his first goal of the season after the Pirates were called for a foul inside their box. Meyerhoff took the penalty for CC, found the back of the net, and put the Tigers in front.

CC limited SWU to 10 shots (three on net). No team in the SCAC has scored against the Tigers this season through six games. The last time CC surrendered a goal was on Sept. 21 against No. 1 Mary Washington. It is also the sixth consecutive win for the Tigers, marking their longest win streak of the season and longest since last year, where they won 10 straight.

Alexander Ward dished out the first shot for CC in the 9th minute, followed by Curtis Hale's first shot in the 11th minute. Ward finished the game with a team-high three shots, including one on net.

Hale, Charlie Wagner, Wyatt Linggi, Oliver Ramirez, and Teddy Opler all logged two shots.

Wagner recorded the first shot on goal in the 24th minute, aiming at the bottom right corner of the net, but it was saved by SWU's goalkeeper Scott Johnson. That was the only shot on goal for CC in the first half. SWU had no shot on target at the break.

In the second, Ward recorded the second shot on net in the 57th minute that was also saved. Seven minutes later, Wyatt Linggi was driving in towards the net and was fouled by a Pirate defender, drawing the penalty.

Meyerhoff lined up against Johnson, laced his shot into the bottom left corner and snuck it past the SWU goalkeeper to take the 1-0 lead.

Down by a score, the Pirates pushed to tie the game, putting three shots on net before the final buzzer sounded. Goalkeeper Spencer Besselaar played soundly and secured three saves after the CC goal. The sophomore from Seattle, Wash., earned his fifth shutout on the season and finished the game with three saves.

CC held off SWU for the remainder of the game and moved to 11-1-2. A trip to Texas Lutheran is on the horizon. The Tigers will battle the Bulldogs on Sunday. Oct. 20 at 11 am MT in Seguin, Texas.
