Senior Day was indeed a success at Stewart Field on Sunday, Oct. 27th. The Colorado College women's soccer team won its seventh game at home with a 1-0 victory over Fresno State.
CC (7-9-3) secured the most wins at Stewart since the 2019 season (seven) and the best home win percentage (77.27%) since 2014.
The Tigers relied on a goal off the head of first-year forward
Finley Schoenbeck in the 57th minute. Schoenbeck was in the perfect spot for a ricocheting ball that was initially sent off the foot of
Brett Tsamasfyros into the box. Brett's ball hit the head of a Fresno State Bulldog, and Finley was able to get her own header into the back of the net.
"I'm just really glad we grinded that out," head coach
Keri Sanchez said. "Grit is one of our values, and I feel like that was a gritty win for us. We talked about how, at halftime, we had to figure out a way to put the ball in the back of the net, and I love that they figured out a way to win this game."
It was the fourth goal of the season for Schoenebeck and the first assist of the year for Tsamasfyros.
The Tigers held the Bulldogs to no shots in the first half. It was the first time this year that CC held its opposition to no shots in a half. The Tigers finished by outshooting the Bulldogs 15-7, including 9-0 before the halftime break.
Six of the first nine shots came before the 20th minute. Schoenbeck opened up the offense with a shot on goal in the second minute that was saved. All seniors took the shots for the remainder of the half.
Kaelin Enga,
Alexis Wessler,
Ava Risser, Tsamsafyros,
Gracie Huebner,
Alex Sandoval and
Ashley Stewart recorded shots in the first half.
Tsamafyros led the team with three by the end of the game, including one on goal.
It was a scoreless tie at the half, but it didn't take long for the Tigers to take the lead in the second. After Fresno State recorded its first shot in the 47th minute, Tsamasfyros and
Kendall Memoly dished out two shots before Schoenbeck scored the eventual game-winner in the 57th minute.
From then on, it was all defense for the remainder of the match. CC didn't produce a shot after the Schoenbeck goal but defended six shots from FSU, including two on net. Goalkeeper
Regan Wallace finished the game with two saves and secured the fourth shutout of the season.
CC will turn the page quickly and prepare for the Air Force Academy, whom the Tigers will face on Wednesday, Oct 27 in the City For Champions Cup at Weidner Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm MT.
"We got a lot to play for on Wednesday," Sanchez said. "We have yet to score a goal at Wiener, so we're thrilled to get a chance to show off our offensive quality."
CC and AFA battled to a scoreless draw in the 2024.
