CC Shuts Out Eagles

The Colorado College men's soccer team downed the University of the Ozarks 2-0 on Friday night in Clarksville, Arkansas, behind 25 shots (nine on goal) and goals from Alexander Ward and Oliver Ramirez

Despite the stadium lights shutting off not once but twice to pause the game, the Tigers didn't miss a beat and played lights-out defense against the Eagles, collecting their sixth shutout of the year.

"I thought we were outstanding from start to finish between the 18-yard boxes, but our finishing touch went missing for most of the game," head coach Scott Palguta said.  "I was proud of the group because they stayed the course and didn't waver in their approach. We just kept going until the first goal finally came.

CC was hyper-aggressive offensively against Ozarks, who did a formidable job defending against the Tigers' attacks for most of the game. The match was a 0-0 tie at the break, but Ward broke the tie in the 71st minute after the Eagles were called for a handball inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick.

Ward laced the ball into the right side of the next, which was out of the goalkeeper's reach, and CC was on the board first. Ramirez solidified the victory with his third goal of the season in the 88th minute.

CC dished out seven shots, including two on net in the first half. Ward had the team's first authentic look on net in the 12th minute, but it was saved.  Will Bavier has the other shot on goal in the 27th minute.

The Tigers limited the Eagles to only two shots (one on goal) in the first half, but CC couldn't break the 0-0 tie despite the more offensive chances.

CC's aggressiveness continued into the second half, with 18 shots coming in the latter 45 minutes. Ozarks collected a couple of yellow cards from the first and second half and eventually were awarded a red card in the 56th minute. This put Ozarks down a man for the remaining 34 minutes.

The Tigers took advantage of the extra man and kept pressure on the box, only to force the ball in and get a corner kick set piece in the 71st minute. After CC sent the ball in, the Eagles were called for a handball inside the goalkeeper's box, which resulted in a Tiger penalty kick.

Ward lined up for CC's first PK of the season and successfully converted to put CC up 1-0.

With the 1-0 lead, the Tigers didn't let go of the throttle and put up nine more shots before Ramirez was fed a ball from Wyatt Linggi. Ollie made a move against a single defender and knocked the ball off his left foot into the top right corner of the net for the nail in the coffin.

Ramirez and Linggi led the team with four shots, followed by Ward with three. The Tigers improved to 7-1-2 in the year and 2-0 in the SCAC. CC returns home to Stewart Field to host Centenary at noon on Sunday, Oct. 6th at noon MT.
