Gavin Lindberg and
Zaccharya Wisdom scored 70 seconds apart in the first period, but No. 13/11 Western Michigan rallied with three straight goals, including the overtime game-winner by Tim Washe, for a 3-2 victory over No. 8 Colorado College Friday night at Lawson Arena.
Â
Tim Washe converted a pass from Owen Michaels in front of the net and beat
Kaidan Mbereko with 1:38 remaining in the extra frame. CC had won three overtime games already this season, all on Friday nights.
Â
The Tigers, who suffered their first loss of the season, fell to 8-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the NCHC. The Broncos held on to first place and improved to 6-1-0 and 3-0-0 in league play. Â
Â
Lindberg opened the scoring with his first career goal at 5:24 of the opening frame. He carried the puck down the slot and his shot from the bottom of the right circle deflected off a WMU defender's stick and past Bronco goalie Cameron Rowe.
Ty Gallagher collected his team-high sixth assist of the season and
Tyler Coffey his second.
Â
Just 1:10 later, Wisdom took a cross-ice pass from
Ethan Straky and scored into an empty net from the post to the right of Rowe.
Drew Montgomery started the play and gathered his fourth assist.
Â
Tristan Lemyre put the Broncos on the board at the 9:50 mark of the third period when he beat Mbereko from the slot. Grant Slukynsky evened the score with 3:41 remaining in regulation, setting up the overtime period.
Â
Mbereko was spectacular in net again for the Tigers. He finished with 36 saves as WMU outshot Colorado College, 39-14. The 14 shots are the fewest in a game by the Tigers since attempting seven vs. St. Cloud State on Mar. 12, 2021.
Â
Rowe had 12 saves for WMU, which was 0-2 on the power play. CC was 0-1.
Â
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Nov. 16, beginning at 6 p.m. (ET). Â
