Max Burkholder had a goal and an assist for No. 7/8 Colorado College Friday night, but the Tigers suffered their first home loss of the season, 3-2, to No. 11/10 St. Cloud State at Ed Robson Arena.
Â
The Tigers fell to 8-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the NCHC, while the Huskies improved to 9-3-0 and remained perfect in league play at 3-0-0.
Â
SCSU's Verner Miettinen opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 9:45 mark of the first period. Following a slashing call to CC's
Chase McLane, Tiger goalie
Kaidan Mbereko saved a shot from the point by Josh Luedtke, but Miettinen was on the doorstep and put home the rebound.
Â
The Huskies doubled the lead at the 2:17 mark of the second period when
Tyler Coffey's pass from deep in the Tiger zone found the stick of SCSU's Tyson Gross, who was 1-on-1 with Mbereko from the slot and beat him on the stick side.
Â
CC's leading scorer,
Ty Gallagher, cut the deficit to one with a power-play goal at 7:04 of the middle frame. He took a pass from Burkholder and fired a one-timer past SCSU goalie Isak Posch for his third tally and 10
th point of the season.
Â
The Huskies regained their two-goal lead with an unassisted power-play goal by Austin Burnevik at 10:18 of the second. He gathered the puck in his own zone and created a 2-on-1, but kept it down the right side and placed a backhander past Mbereko.
Â
SCSU held on to the two-goal advantage throughout the third period until Mbereko went to the bench for an extra attacker with just over three minutes remaining and Burkholder rifled a one-timer from the point past Posch with 2:41 left in regulation.
Â
Mbereko (14 saves) headed to the bench once again a few seconds after play resumed and the Tigers kept the puck in the SCSU end, but had two shots blocked and another two shots saved by Posch, who finished with 25 stops.
Â
St. Cloud State scored on two of their three power-play opportunities, while CC, which held a 27-17 shot advantage, was 1-for-3.
Â
The two teams will battle again on Saturday, Nov. 23, beginning at 6 p.m.
