Kaidan Mbereko had a season-high 41 saves to lead No. 8 Colorado College to a 3-1 victory and a sweep of Arizona State in the opening weekend of NCHC action. The Tigers improved to 8-0 for the first time since the 1956-57 season, CC's last national championship.
Â
Drew Montgomery opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 10:41 mark of the opening period.
Max Burkholder sent the puck to
Zaccharya Wisdom, who found himself on a 2-on-1 with Montgomery and fed him perfectly. Montgomery cleanly beat ASU goalie Luke Pavicich from the left circle for his third tally of the season.
Â
The Tigers had a golden opportunity to double the lead in the second period, but Pavicich saved a shot by
Owen Beckner during a 2-on-0 with
Klavs Veinbergs.
Â
Mbereko made 16 saves in each of the first two periods to keep the Sun Devils at bay, then
Tyler Coffey took a pass from
Stanley Cooley and beat Pavicich on a breakaway midway through the third period. The only goal Mbereko allowed was an extra-attacker goal by David Hymovitch with 45 seconds left in the contest that made it 2-1.
Â
However, Veinbergs sealed the deal with an empty-net goal with nine seconds remaining, with assists going to
Bret Link and
Gavin Lindberg, who collected his first career point.
Â
ASU outshot the Tigers, 42-21, the most by an opponent this season. Pavicich finished the game with 18 saves.
Â
The Tigers travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a weekend series against No. 14/13 Western Michigan, Nov. 15-16.
