It came down to a final
Scott Ruegg three-pointer to tie No. 8 Trinity in San Antonio; however, the Colorado College men's basketball team fell just a hair short on Sunday in a thriller against the top team in the SCAC by a final score 59-57.
The Tigers outrebounded Trinity 59-42 and held the opposition to 26.9 percent shooting from the floor, but it came down to the made shots in the final seconds to determine the game. Trinity drilled a three-pointer to take a one-point lead with 38 seconds left as CC couldn't hit on their last few attempts to regain the lead.
CC drops to 13-10 (7-7 SCAC) on the season but is playing some of their best basketball, especially defensively, as the postseason approaches. The Tigers held the top scoring offense in the SCAC to 59 points despite entering the contest averaging 82.9 points per game.
In the first half, Trinity shot only 20.00 percent from the floor, and CC entered the halftime break up 23-20. Neither offense had a stellar day, and the Tigers finished the afternoon making 29 percent of their floor shots, including 22.2 percent from long range.
Dinari Boykin led the Tigers with 13 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and a steal. The sophomore racked up his sixth double-double of the season and also put up a career-high in rebounds. His previous was 12 boards.
Adrian Price swiped six boards and became the third Tiger this season to surpass 300 career rebounds. He joins
Trey Crawford and Boykin, who surpassed the same milestone in the last two weeks.
Ruegg and
Devin Philio combined for 16 points and 10 rebounds. Philio is one rebound away from reaching 300 career rebounds.
Despite CC having the lead at the half, Trinity came out and regained the advantage with 18:50 to play and built their lead up to seven. CC countered with a 10-5 run to bring the game back within two points with 13:10 in the game.
Three minutes later, Philio converted on a layup in the paint and gave CC their first lead of the half, 39-38. The game changed leads 11 more times in the remaining time including when
Kevin Dittman made two free throws to make it 57-55 CC with 48 seconds remaining.
Trinity made their game-winning three on the ensuing possession and ultimately won 59-57.
CC looks ahead to their two final games of the regular season next weekend at home against Austin College and the University of Dallas. The Tigers host Austin College on Friday, Feb. 16 with a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
