The Colorado College men's basketball team dominated all facets of the game against the University of Dallas in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. On Friday afternoon, the No. 4 seeded Tigers took down the No. 5 seeded Crusaders, 87-58, in Shreveport, La.
The efforts of
Orion Samikoglu,
Devin Philio,
Adrian Price, and others led the Tigers to their first SCAC Tournament win since Feb. 27, 2016. Samikoglu scored a career-high 18 points after shooting 7-14 from the floor. He finished the game with five rebounds, an assist and a steal.
"Today was a great day for all Tigers," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "Our guys were locked in, played hard, executed the scouting report and game plan. They demonstrated great courage and humility in the face of some adversity this week, but I'm not surprised; that's what they have done all year."
Five Tigers scored in double digits.
Asher Nofziger racked up his second double-double of the season after dishing out 12 points, 10 rebounds, and two steals. Philio added 15 points and six boards,
Price and Hendler combined for 23 points and 11 boards.
CC led wire to wire, scoring the game's first two buckets and not looking back. The Tigers reached their first double-digit lead in the first half when Price scored off the glass to make it a 21-11 contest with 12:11 left.
The Crusaders brought the score back within single digits on the following play, but Samikoglu converted on a lay up two plays later to make it 27-16, and the Tigers controlled the game from that point forward.
CC outshot their opponents 18-11 (FGs) in the first half, holding Dallas to 33.3 percent from the floor, including 28.6 percent from three-point range. The Tigers also controlled the boards 23-16 in the first half, limiting the second-chance opportunities Dallas needed.
At the half, the Tigers led 45-30 after shooting 52.9 percent from the floor. Samikoglu has 13 points, while Philio had 10 at the break. Price had five of his seven rebounds in the first half.
In the second, the game plan was much of the same. CC attacked the basket and ended the game with 42 points inside the paint to Dallas' 26. The Tigers' bench also played lights out, scoring 41 of the 87 points.
CC shot only 35.3 percent in the second half, but they made 15 of 20 attempts from the free-throw line to maintain the sizeable lead. Defensively, the Tigers held Dallas to a .303 clip in the second half.
"Today was one of our best games playing together and playing hard on both ends," Conarroe said. "They have committed to the process and have a belief amongst themselves and in what we do. I'm very proud of them, but we get another opportunity tomorrow. We are not done yet."
The Tigers advance to the semifinals to take on top-seeded and No. 10 Trinity. The Tigers faced off against then No. 8 Trinity on Feb. 11 and barely lost in a 59-57 battle. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. MT.
