The Colorado College men's basketball team's run in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament ended in the title game against Centenary on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers led at the half, but a solid second half by the Gents lifted them over by a final score of 83-76.
CC dropped to 16-12 on the season but showed a valiant effort in their third-ever SCAC Championship appearance, the first since 2016.
Scott Ruegg led CC with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Dinari Boykin followed suit with 11 points, three boards, an assist, a block and a steal.
It was a back-and-forth game the entire afternoon. There were eight lead changes throughout the 40 minutes, and neither team could pull ahead, except the Gents in the final seconds.
CC led 41-40 at the halftime break after shooting 53.57 percent from the floor in the first half.
Asher Nofziger led the Tigers with nine points in the first half, while Centenary had Tykeem Singleton with 18. Singleton finished the game with a floor-high 33 points. Three Gents players were responsible for 74 percent of the Centenary scoring.
Both teams shot the ball exceptionally well from beyond the arc in the first half. Ruegg was a perfect 4-4 from long range, but finished the game 5-10. CC attempted 17 threes in the second half but only made four. Centenary drained only three of them, but 18 made free throws in the second half, which helped seal the victory for the Gents.
The Tigers had a slight advantage at the half, but the Gents came out of the break and retook the lead 42-41 a minute into the half. The Tigers stole it back with 16:29 left after a free throw by
Adrian Price, who followed it with a jumper inside the lane to extend the lead to 47-44 CC.
The advantage exchanged hands three times over the next two minutes, including a three-pointer from
Edgar Romero to make it 52-50, but Singleton scored shortly after, putting the Gents up in front. Centenary didn't lose the lead for the remainder of the game despite the gritty effort of the Tigers to keep the game close.
CC was down by as many as 11 with five minutes to go but managed to chip the lead to as little as four with less than a minute to go. However, the Gents did a good job not turning the basketball over, and a few CC three-pointers fell short as Centenary eventually won and claimed the SCAC Championship.
Ruegg, Boykin, and Price were all selected for the SCAC All-Tournament team for their performances over the last three games.
The Tigers will await the possibility of an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
