Colorado College fell to top-seeded Trinity in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Game 63-57 on Sunday in Shreveport, LA.
The Tigers struggled to shoot the basketball as their field goal percentage was limited to 34.5 percent. CC held Trinity to 38.9 percent from the floor, but the No. 1 seed shot slightly better outside the arc and at the free throw line, which proved to be the difference maker.
Trinity led most of the game and did the necessary work to keep CC out of the paint. The Tigers made only 24 points in the paint and shot 27.3 percent from long range. SCAC Player of the Year
Zoë Tomlinson led the team with 21 points and 22 rebounds. She added three blocks defensively.
Rose Koehler, named to the SCAC All-Freshman team the day on Saturday, racked up 13 points, six assists and two assists. Senior and All-SCAC Honorable Mention selection
Audrey Bayston added 12 points, two boards and four assists.
Trinity had six players score seven points or more, including Jamie Ruede, who led the team with 18 points.
CC made only three shots in the first quarter but responded nicely in the second quarter, shooting 58.33 percent from the floor. They cut down a 12-point Trinity lead with a minute left in the first to four points with a minute left in the half. Trinity worked their advantage back up to seven, and CC went into the break down 32-25.
The game stayed within reach for CC in the third quarter, but the Tigers could not steal the lead. A layup by Tomlinson with 4:22 left in the quarter made it a 36-34 contest, but for every bucket the Tigers had, it felt as if Trinity had an answer.
CC held Trinity to a .235 clip in the third quarter and found themselves down only four points heading into the final ten minutes. A three out the game by Ruede extended it back out to seven, but Bayston countered with one of her own, making it 45-41 with under nine minutes left.
Three minutes later, the Tigers tied it up at 47 a piece thanks to a pair of shots at the charity stripe and a layup by Tomlinson. The New York native led the team with nine points in the fourth quarter but had one of their better shooting quarters to close the game. They made 50 percent of their shots and converted 9 of 12 attempts at the free-throw line.
CC could not mount a miracle comeback in the remaining few minutes, and Trinity held on just long enough to claim the SCAC Championship.
Tomlinson and Bayston were both named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team.
The Tigers will await the chance to claim a at large bid in the NCAA Tournament.
