Seniors Come Up Big As CC Picks Up First Win Of The Season

The Colorado College women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season after a 20-11 victory over Ursinus on Tuesday's home opener. The Tigers had five players score multiple goals against the Bears.

"Our senior captains stepped up today," head coach Susan Stuard said. "In addition to accounting for 50 percent of our points, they sparked the team's momentum and kept the energy up for a full 60-minute performance.

Senior Devon Ortman led the team with a career-high seven points. The captain had a career-high five goals and two assists, topping her former career-high of four goals.

Fellow captain Kendall Havill also lit up the scoreboard, dishing out a team-high eight points, including a season-high six goals and two assists. Havill also had three ground balls and a caused turnover. Ortman had four ground balls and five draw controls.

Senior Caroline Shay scored a season-high four goals.

In addition to solid performances from the three seniors, the freshmen pair of Charlotte Iler and Sofia Mancino combined for eight points. Iler dished out a career-high three assists and Mancino scored a career-high two goals.

CC trailed only twice in the game. Ursinus scored the opening goal, but the Tigers responded shortly after with Havill's first goal with 13:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Bears replied with a goal of their own with 12:48 remaining. CC closed out the first, scoring five of the seven goals to take a 7-4 lead going into the second.

With the lead, the Tigers' offense continued to pick up the pace. Ortman scored twice in the second half, and Caroline Shay scored with one second remaining. Shay had three of her four goals in the first half.

CC led 12-6 at the halftime break and didn't look back. In the third, the Tigers scored seven additional goals and outshot the Bears 9-4. Mancino scored her goals back-to-back to lead off the quarter, and Havill, Ortman and Shay followed suit, all scoring to put CC up 18-6 with eight minutes to play.

The Tigers rode out their victory from there and racked up their first victory of the season.

CC will return to action on Saturday, March 9th, against Carthage College at 1 p.m. MT.
