The Colorado College men's lacrosse team's three-game winning streak ended against No. 9 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Virginia. The Tigers battled through and through, but a solid second quarter by the Captains elevated them in the end.
The first quarter showcased the Tigers' firepower, with key players like
Braydon Ellis and
Thomas Power leading the charge. Ellis, in particular, made a significant impact, scoring the first goal for CC after CNU's opening goal. Power followed suit, giving CC their first lead of the game with 12:36 left in the quarter.
CC and CNU continued to exchange blows as the quarter went on. Hudson and Ellis racked up goals in response to a couple of Captain goals, but a late run by CNU had CC down 5-4 going into the second.
The second quarter was a rollercoaster offensively. Ellis started it with a bang, recording his third goal of the half and tying the game at 5-5 with 13:55 remaining. CNU countered with back-to-back strikes, regaining the lead temporarily. However, CC staged their most extensive run of the game, scoring four goals from the 12:19 mark to 8:36 remaining in the half, taking a 9-8 advantage. When it seemed like CC was in control, CNU responded with a five-goal run, ending the half with a lead.
Af the beginning of the third, CC trailed 13-9 but was able to take some air out of the ballooned lead with consecutive strikes from
Dylan Brown and Power, making the game 13-11 CNU.
For the remainder of the third, the CC went scoreless, then to start the fourth, CNU scored two additional goals, extending the lead to 18-11. Power scored one final goal with 2:41 left in the game to cut the lead down to 16, but it was too much to overcome in the end.
Power led the way with four goals, bringing his season total to 35, tied with Hudson's for a team-high. Hudson finished Sunday with two goals. Power leads the team with 51 points in the season, and it is now tied for 33rd all-time in program history for most in a single season.
CC will wrap up the regular season in two weeks when they travel to Grand Junction, CO, to battle Division II foe Colorado Mesa University on May 4th.
