For the tenth consecutive time, the Colorado College women's lacrosse team took care of business in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday in Chicago, IL, the Tigers downed Aurora University 18-2 at the University of Chicago. CC has not lost an opening-round game in the tourney since 2002.
The Tigers claimed their fifth-straight win by holding the Spartans to only 11 shots while causing a season-high 17 turnovers. Nine players contributed a CTO led by
Devon Ortman,
Amanda Roan Frances Hansot, who each had three; a season-high for Ortman and a career-high for Hansot. It is the most team caused turnovers the Tigers have captured since April 18th against The College of New Jersey.
Offensively, the scoring was conducted by
Kendall Havill,
Charlotte Iler and
Tobin Lonergan. Each trio member dished out three goals, while sophomore
Grace Bean led the team with five points, two goals and three assists.
11 different Tigers found the back of the net on Saturday, and seven of the goals went with assists.
With its hair on fire, CC jumped out of the gates, scoring 10 unanswered goals in the first quarter. Ortman initiated the offense only 18 seconds into the game. Oakland won the draw control and then quickly slung the first goal into the back of the net. CC never trailed throughout the 60-minute contest.
Iler scored her first goal 55 seconds later, and Lonergan grabbed her first two minutes after Iler's goal. Freshman
Meghan Collins then nabbed her first goal, a birthday present for herself as she and
Grace Bean share a May 11th birthday. Bean scored her fist goal with 2:05 left in the quarter to put CC up 10-0.
The birthday duo finished with seven combined points, three goals, four assists, three ground balls and a draw control.
Up by 10 at the start of the second, the Tigers ballooned the lead to 13 with goals from
Oliv Janerico, her fourth of the season, Bean and Iler. The Spartans responded with their first and only goals of the day, back-to-back scores with 56 seconds left in the half. At the halftime break, the Tigers led 13-2.
With the clock still running at the start of the third quarter, Junior
Kelsey Shankle increased the lead to 12 with 10:45 remaining after
Sofia Mancino assisted on the goal off a free position play. Three minutes later,
Ella Roe collected her seventh goal of the season after scoring on a free position attempt.
Havill rounded out the third quarter by scoring her third goal with 4:39 remaining after taking it from restraining line to restraining line and then streaming past the goalie for her 85th goal of the season. Havill has 144 career goals after Saturday and needs four more to move up to eighth all-time in CC history.
Bridget Hanley and
Meilani Molina scored additional goals in the fourth quarter as CC cruised to an 18-2 victory, improving their all-time NCAA Tournament record to 14-13.
The Tigers finished with 41 shots and had only 10 turnovers. CC was also a perfect 18-18 on clears.
CC will play host U Chicago on Sunday at noon MT. It will be the season's second meeting between the Tigers and the Maroons. On March 16th, CC downed the then No. 18 team in the country 26-16 at Washburn Field. Last season in Chicago, the Maroons were victorious in a 14-13 overtime thriller.
