The 2024 season for the Colorado College women's soccer program debuts on Thursday, Aug. 15th, in Missoula, Mont., as the Tigers take on the Grizzlies of the University of Montana. CC will play two games in Big Sky country, its second being on Sunday, Aug. 18th, against the University of Iowa.
Before the opening-day matchup against the Griz, let's preview the position groups for the Tigers to prepare you for soccer season. In this installment, we'll preview the CC forwards and midfielders.
CC enters the fall without three of its top point leaders from 2023, but it possesses a healthy number of experienced upperclassmen and a fresh dose of a few first-year players to build the midfield and forward position groups for 2024.
The Returners
CC carries 12 returners who are listed as either midfielders or forwards from last season's roster. Nine of the 12 started in a game, and five are returning seniors. Moreover, the Tigers are unconcerned about a lack of experience or depth in the attacking zone.
Five players finished 2023 with multiple points, including seniors
Alexis Wessler,
Alex Sandoval, and
Kaelin Enga, who all scored three points. As CC looks to fill the scoring roles, look for these three players' productivity to increase.
Wessler, a Highlands Ranch native, led the team with 1,535 minutes played last year and returns this year for a fifth year as the most experienced player on the roster. The midfielder enters her final season with 68 games played, 67 starts and over 5,600 minutes played.
Enga was 20 minutes shy of the 1,000-minute mark last year. The Colorado Springs product finished the season with three points, nine shots, one shot on goal.
Enga and Wessler were named to the Mountain West Players To Watch list for 2024; the third Tiger named to the list is MaKenna Kolson. The junior started in 11 matches last year and finished the season with 16 appearances. She was fifth on the team with 1,091 minutes played and logged four 90-minute games.
Sandoval also returns for a fifth year in 2024 after making 17 starts in 2023. She logged a career-high 1151 minutes and finished the season with three points, a goal and an assist, three shots, and a shot percentage of .333.
Senior
Brett Tsamasfyros returns to the starting lineup this year after playing in all 18 matches with two starts in 2023. The San Mateo native was second on the team with eight shots on the goal and finished the year with one goal, 14 shots and a SOG percentage of .571.
Senior
Gracie Huebner is known for playing across the entire pitch and can play crunch-time minutes for the Tigers, especially in the attacking third. She finished with 10 shots in 2023 and tallied an assist as well.
Sophomore
Tyler Rose will look to make a jump this year. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native was one of two freshmen to play in all 18 matches last fall. Rose made five starts, ended the season with two points, and was second amongst freshmen with 11 shots.
Kendall Memoly made an impact during her freshman campaign. The Laguna Hills, Calif., native appeared in 17 matches, starting in 10. She logged 1027 minutes, including two full 90-minute games against Boise St. and New Mexico, and finished the year with 13 shots (fifth on the team).
Sophomore
Emma Smith rounds out the group and enters her second season with the program with seven starts under her belt. After playing her high school career 45 minutes up I-25 at Douglas Country High School, Smith contributed to the Tigers in her first year with six consecutive starts and finished the season appearing in 13 matches.
The Rookies
Head coach
Keri Sanchez added valuable depth and talent with the class of first-years on the roster. CC carries four freshmen listed as midfielders or forwards:
Dayleigh Bos,
Finley Schoenbeck,
Emily Archuleta and
Meli Coats.
Archuleta is a flexible addition to the roster as she excels in 1v1 defending but also likes to get involved in the attack. The Ranchos de Taos native helped lead the Penguins of Cushing Academy to a 4-4-2 record in 2023.
Bos will look to insert herself into the CC offense with a reputation for versatility. She played most recently for FC Dallas ECNL U18/19, and in 2022, she helped lead Wakeland High School to a 5A UIL State title.
Another Texas native, Finley Shoenbeck, comes to Colorado Springs from Lake Travis High School and helped lead the Cavaliers to a 16-7-1 record in her senior season.
Coats scored six goals her senior year at Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas, NV. The midfielder/defender appeared in 20 matches, adding another valuable piece to the CC midfield.
The Tigers take on the Grizzlies at 6 p.m. MT on Thursday evening in Montana. The game can be seen on ESPN+.
