Tigers Improve To 2-0 At Stewart With 2-0 Win Over UNC

On Sunday at Stewart Field, the Colorado College women's soccer team took care of business against the University of Northern Colorado. The Tigers downed the Bears 2-0 to secure back-to-back home shutout victories.

"We have great fans at home," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "I think we get excited to show what we're about. We started a little bit slow, but we really grew into the game and got settled after that."

CC improved to 2-2 on the season and successfully shut out their opponents at home in sequent games for the first time since 2022. Junior Kylie Smith became the third Tiger in as many games to nab her first career goal.  Kendall Memoly collected her second career score to put the game away in the second half.

"I think this year we are going to be kinda a score-by-committee and we are excited our players are getting confident enough to score goals," Sanchez said. "We're trying to get better at getting in behind defenses…I like that we're taking steps forward each game."

Smith's goal broke the 0-0 tie in the 27th minute when the Centennial native scotched down the west sideline, split the defense and launched a ball off her right foot into the top left corner of the net, just out of the reach of the goalkeeper. Over the weekend, Smith started in both contests and recorded 72 minutes on the pitch, two shots and the goal.

Smith led the team with two shots in the first, and Ashley Stewart and Gracie Huebner also got off shots before the break. CC led 1-0 after the first 45'.

In the second, CC put up six shots, including four on net. In the 80th minute, the Tigers' defense pressured the Bears' offense for the entire pitch length as Finley Schoenbeck forced a critical change of possession deep in the attacking third. She was able to steal the possession and find Memoly one-on-one with the keeper, as the sophomore collected her second goal of the week.

Schoenbeck has had a stellar first four games of her collegiate career. The Texas native is second on the team with three points, while Memoly leads the Tigers with four points.

CC's defense excelled for the full 90 minutes as well. Regan Wallace collected her second career shutout and improved her record to 2-2. The sophomore made three saves. Ava Risser, Alexis Wessler, Emily Hitt and Evie Biggs all logged 60 or more minutes on the defensive side of the pitch.

"That's continually one area of the field we want to improve on this year," Sanchez said of the defense. "We've really committed to each other and the midfielders helping out, making sure it is really hard to get a shot off against us."

Sunday's win marks CC's first back-to-back wins since Oct. 6th, 2022. It also matches the opening home weekend of the 2022 season, where CC won consecutive games in shutout fashion.

CC finished the game with a season-high 10 shots, five on goal, and three players (Gracie Huebner, Smith and Memoly) with multiple shots.

The Tigers play again in three days as they host the 2023 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champion, the UCCS Mountain Lions.
