Enga Has Career Night, Leads CC Over Mountain Lions

Senior midfielder Kaelin Enga dished a career-high four points to lead the Colorado College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Wednesday night. CC improved their win streak to three straight and remained undefeated at Stewart to start the 2024 campaign.

"It's exciting that we are continuing to build momentum and build the lead [in games]," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "The defense played hard tonight…I love that we kept scoring and scored the most goals we've had for a while."

The Tigers secured their first three-game winning streak and first four-goal performance since 2019. Enga entered Wednesday with 15 career points (five goals, four assists). She racked up her sixth career goal and assisted on two others.

"She came back from an injury and didn't get to play all spring, so we're starting to see her come into form," Sanchez said. "That is great for us as we get into the thick of our season."

Enga's four points are the most in a single game since Shalom Prince scored two goals against San Jose State on Oct. 19, 2023, to lead a come-from-behind CC win.

CC's first goal of the game came in the 30th minute when freshman Finley Schoenbeck flicked the ball past UCCS goalkeeper Alex Malaspina for her second career goal. Enga recorded her first assist of the night on the goal after sending an excellent cross to Schoenbeck in the box.

Schoenbeck became the first CC freshman to record multiple goals in a season since Enga accomplished the same feat in 2021.

The Tigers entered the break leading 1-0. The score remained the same for 25 minutes into the second half. Nevertheless, CC scored three goals in a span of four minutes and 37 seconds. The first of the trio came in the 70th minute as Kylie Smith glanced the ball into the back of the net after Enga fed the junior for her second career goal. Smith became the second Tiger this season to score in back-to-back games.

Enga got her own goal with a returnable favor from Smith in the 72nd minute. Smith lined a gorgeous cross to the head of Enga, who bounced the ball in, increasing the lead to 3-0. The fourth and final goal for CC came off a corner kick in the 74th minute. Dayleigh Bos found a loose ball in front of the net and secured her first career goal as a Tiger.

CC totaled a season-high 19 shots and 11 shots on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Zahra Cheeseman recorded her first career start and finished the game with three saves in the winning effort.

Four Tigers made their first career start on Wednesday: Cheeseman, first-years Meli Coats, Charlotte Strabel and Emily Archuleta. Veronica Bianco and Gracie Huebner also racked up their first starts of the season.

CC aims its sights on their first road game since Aug. 16 as the Tigers travel up I-25 on Sunday, Sept. 1 to take on the University of Denver Pioneers at 1 pm in Denver.

"We're excited," Sanchez said. "DU has come on and played some really good initial games for them, so that's gonna be a tough opponent for us and give us a really good test to see where we are at before we head into Mountain West play."

The Pioneers host Cal State Northridge on Thursday night and have a 2-2 record.
