The Colorado College women's soccer team secured a crucial 2-1 win over the University of Wyoming to open up Mountain West Conference play on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Stewart Field.
Two goals from
Brett Tsamasfyros and
Kendall Memoly in the first half elevated the Tigers to their fifth win of the season. CC is 5-0-1 at Stewart Field and improved to 5-4-1. It's CC's first non-COVID conference opener win since 2019.
"I'm just excited with how our team came out," head coach
Keri Sanchez said. "They came out with excellent energy, and it always helps a ton when you can score an early goal; then we got the second one, which really settled us down. It was exciting to see what kind of energy they came out with tonight."
Tsamasfyros led off the scoring in the sixth minute after defender
Evie Biggs lined a perfect feed from midfield to Brett, who was all alone in the attacking zone. The senior laced a shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season, all of which came in the last three games.
The senior captain has the first CC individual three-game scoring streak since Tiger legend Sarah Schweiss scored in four consecutive games during the 2015 season.
Biggs' assist was her career first.
With the lead, the Tigers kept the pressure on and eventually scored again, this time in the 13th minute after
Gracie Huebner had a shot deflected in front of the net before Memoly came in for the second ball and nabbed her third goal of the season. The sophomore is third on the team with six points.
The Cowgirls got on the board after securing multiple set pieces in the first half. Maddi Burr was able to strike after a ball got loose in the box after a corner kick, and the lead was cut in half. The score remained 2-1 heading into the halftime break. CC had four shots to Wyoming's five.
The script flipped to the Tiger defense making plays in the second half. Sophomore goalkeeper
Regan Wallace commanded the defense and held the lead for the Tigers.
"We talked about them being brave and courageous," Sanchez said. "Wyoming is a really good team, they got really good speed. They transition really fast and have really good set pieces…We did a really good job at battling and blocking shots to defend second balls,"
Wyoming had one of the best chances in the 90th minute, as a Cowgirl broke loose in front of the goal, but Wallace came up and broke up the attack to seal the 2-1 victory.
Wallace finished with five saves, tied for second-most this season. The Rancho Cucamonga native secured her fourth win, surpassing her freshman-year total of three. CC will await Sunday, Sept. 29, to take on Colorado State, who downed Air Force 4-0 on Thursday night.
Kickoff against the Rams is set for 3:30 p.m. MT.
