Tigers Prepare For Trip To Southern Utah To Face Thunderbirds

The Colorado College women's soccer team travels west to Cedar City, UT, for another non-conference matchup against Southern Utah on Thursday, Sept. 5. The Tigers look to get back in the win column after having their three-game win streak broken this last Sunday in Denver.

Last Time Out

CC came to Denver riding a three-game winning streak but could not down the University of Denver as the Pioneers won 2-0. The defending Summit League champions scored a goal in each half to win their first game over the Tigers since 2013.

Tyler Rose led the team with three shots, two on net, and the team finished with 13 shots (six on goal). The Pioneers put up 13 shots in the first half, but the Tigers outshot the Pioneers 11-8 in the second half.

The Road Ahead

The Tigers play four of their first seven games on the road, including this week at Southern Utah. CC is 0-2 on the road this year and 0-1 in a neutral game vs No. 24 Iowa in Missoula, MT.

CC is 3-0 at Stewart Field. Four of the following five games are in Colorado Springs. The Tigers seek their first road win on Thursday against the Thunderbirds, who are 0-3-1 to start the year.

Streak of Tigers

CC enjoyed its first three-game winning streak since the 2019 season with wins over South Dakota State, Northern Colorado and UCCS. During the run, the Tigers outscored their opponents 7-1 and outshot opposing teams on goal 21-9.

Freshman Finley Schoenbeck and junior Kylie Smitih currently lead the Tigers with five points (2g, 1a) each. Five Tigers have two or more points through the first six games.

Senior Kaelin Enga had one of the more impressive singular performances this season with a goal and two assists against UCCS on Aug. 28. It was a career-high for the Colorado Springs native and stands as the only multi-assist game for any CC player this season.

Enga's two-assist game was the first for a CC player since Tiger legend Jacqui Hand had two assists on Oct. 14, 2021, against Boise State.

Scouting The Opposition
Southern Utah enters the week with a 0-3-1 record. To open the season, the Thunderbirds faced two other Mountain West opponents, UNLV and Nevada, and scored a goal in each match.

The Thunderbirds hosted their first two home contests against the University of Omaha and Eastern Washington. The Mavericks won 2-1 after being down 1-0 at the half. Southern Utah battled Eastern Washington to a 1-1 tie last Thursday.

Redshirt junior Whitney Gardner leads the Thunderbirds with two goals, both coming in the last two games against Omaha and Eastern Washington. Two other players, Haily Hamataka and Chelsea Loeser, have goals on the stat sheet.

Up Next

CC returns to Stewart Field on Sunday, September 8th, to host the University of California-Santa Barbara. The Tigers are 3-0 at home this year.

The Gauchos are 1-1-3 to start the season, with the lone win coming against San Jose State last Sunday. UCSB has three ties against San Diego, Fresno State, and Sacramento State.  The two programs faced off last in 2022, where the Tigers escaped with a 2-1 victory.
