Tigers Shutout Prairie Wolves In Lincoln

On Saturday, Teddy Opler and Vincent Luglio's goals led the Colorado College men's soccer team over Nebraska Wesleyan by a final score of 2-0 in Lincoln, Neb.

The Tigers moved to 3-0 on the season and racked up their third-straight shutout to start the year. It's the first time since 2021 CC has started the season 3-0 and the first time since 2016 the program hasn't allowed a goal in its first three games.

"Today's game was a grinder in a difficult place to play," head coach Scott Palguta said. "NWU is an excellent home team, and they make things complicated with their athleticism and pressure. We played the game well, mostly on our terms. The team defensive effort was also excellent."

The Tigers handed the Prairie Wolves their first loss at home since Sept. 5, 2022. NWU went 10-0-1 in Lincoln last season.

Freshman Teddy Opler broke the 0-0 tie in the 31st minute after Teddy Libby fed his fellow namesake with a beautiful pass into the attacking third; Opler found a touch off his left foot past the goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.

Opler is the first Tiger to reach three goals. Luglio became the second in the 65th minute after an assist from Wyatt Linggi to put the game away.

CC opened up the first half by taking 15 shots, including three on target. Four players in Opler, Luglio, Zeke Lubin and Curtis Hale led the way with two shots each. 11 different Tigers were credited shots in the first half.

Defensively, the Tigers held the Prairie Wolves to two shots (one on net) in the first 45 minutes.

The visiting team had a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break, and the Tigers kept the pressure on in the second. CC upped the intensity in shot volume out of the break, taking another 15 shots (six on goal) to increase the lead.

Luglio did just that in the 65th minute for the third goal of the season, marking his first three-goal season since his freshman year campaign, where he finished with 11.

Goalkeeper Spencer Besselaar improved his record to 3-0 and currently leads the nation with his three shutouts.

Eight Tigers took multiple shots against NWU. Senior Curtis Hale led the team with five and played all 90 minutes. Luglio ended the day with four.

"Our depth is one of our best qualities, and the team showcased it a bit today," Palguta said. "A third goal would have been nice, but I can't complain about shutout road wins."

CC continues its weekend in Lincoln, taking on Simpson College on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. MT.
