Tsamasfyros Collects Hat Trick, Tigers Down Gauchos At Home

The last Colorado College women's soccer hat trick occurred in 2017 when Lauren Millett scored three goals against the University of South Dakota in a 4-1 win.

On Sunday, Sept 8, at Stewart Field, senior Brett Tsamasfyros collected her own three-goal game as the Tigers downed the University of California Santa Barbara with a final score of 3-2.

It is Tsamasfyros' first career multi-goal game, and the Tigers improved to 4-0 at home to start the season, matching the 4-0 home start in 2019.

"That's one of our strengths," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "Our depth that we have. Just unbelievable when Brett came in off the bench. She and the couple of players she came in with really changed the game for us."

The San Mateo, Calif. native doubled her career goal total in a single game. Tsamasfyros had three career scores coming into Sunday and scored her fourth career (first of the season) goal in the 24th minute. The Gauchos had a 1-0 lead after adding their first tally in the 15th minute.

Nine minutes later, Tsamasfyros was on the positive end of a bouncing ball in the attacking third and found the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. In the 37th minute, Tsamasfyros streaked down the far sideline and launched a rocket off her right foot to the top left corner of the net to give CC the 2-1 lead.

The Tigers led by a goal at the break. In the first half, CC put up six shots (three on goal), while the Gauchos put up seven (four on net). Goalkeeper Regan Wallace had three saves at the half.

The home team favored the lead for the first 25 minutes of the second half. However, in the 70th minute, Devin Greer broke free and slipped the ball past Wallace to tie the match at 2-2.

It appeared as if the Gauchos would force their fifth tie of the season as the clock continued to wind down. Consequently, Tsamasfyros had another goal in mind.

Freshman Emily Archuleta had a chance for a beautiful cross in the 85th minute and fed Tsamasfyros, who delivered with an emphatic header on the receiving end to send the ball into the back of the neck.

Tsamasfyros' goal gave the Tigers the 3-2 lead with five minutes to go, and the defense ran the clock from there. CC improved to 4-4-0 with the win and ended its two-game skid.

"Brett came out like she was shot out of a cannon," Sanchez said.

CC is 4-0 at Stewart and has outscored their opponents 10-3 on its home turf.

"You just see the confidence come out in our team," Sanchez said about playing at Stewart Field. "At home, I love that we are making a stand. Even though we got scored on, we managed a way to come back and win and I'm really excited for the players today."

The Tigers host the University of Buffalo on Thursday, Sept 12 at 6 p.m. MT to round out non-conference play. The first Mountain West game of the season is against Wyoming on Sept. 26th.
