Minnesota Duluth Avoids Sweep, Downs No. 18 Tigers

Behind 27 saves from Klayton Knapp, Minnesota Duluth downed No. 18 Colorado College, 4-1, Saturday night at Ed Robson Arena.

CC and Minnesota Duluth are now tied for sixth place in the NCHC, one point behind Denver and four points behind fourth-place North Dakota.

UMD's Max Plante opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 18:53 mark of the first period with a shot from the high slot that beat CC goalie Kaidan Mbereko (19 saves).

The Tigers (11-10-1, 5-6-1 NCHC) responded quickly as Gleb Veremyev scored his team-high seventh goal of the season just 42 seconds later. Phillipe Blais-Savoie took the puck to the net and Knapp deflected the puck to Veremyev, who was open on the right side and put a backhand into the open net.

The Bulldogs (9-12-1, 5-7-0) scored a pair of reviewed goals in the second period to take the lead for good. Blake Bechen scored at the 10:17 mark when he deflected a shot from the point past Mbereko, but CC coach Kris Mayotte challenged that the deflection was due to a high stick. Following a five-minute review, the officials ruled it was a good goal.

Following a contact to head minor call against Brady Cleveland, UMD's Jayson Shaugabay scored on the power play from the left circle at the 17:22 mark for a 3-1 lead. Despite losing the first challenge, Mayotte challenged for goalie interference, but was once again denied and, not only did the goal count, but the Tigers were assessed a delay of game penalty.

With Mbereko on the bench in favor of an extra skater late in the third period, Anthony Menghini scored an empty-net goal with 2:01 to play for the final tally.

Minnesota Duluth was 2-for-6 on the power-play, just the second time this season a CC opponent scored multiple power-play goals in a game. The Tigers were 0-for-3 with a man advantage.

The Tigers return to action next weekend, Jan. 24-25, against NCHC leading and 13th-ranked Arizona State in Tempe.
