No. 19 Tigers Fall to 11th-Ranked Arizona State

Arizona State scored three times in the second period and the 11th-ranked Sun Devils rolled to a 4-1 victory over No. 19 Colorado College Friday night in Tempe.

Luke Pavicich stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faces as ASU remains in first place in the NCHC.

Following a scoreless first period, the Sun Devils took over the game in the middle frame.

ASU's Cole Gordon opened the scoring at the 11:11 mark of the second period. CC goalie Kaidan Mbereko (21 saves) stopped a shot by Sam Court, but Gordon was right in front and placed a backhander over Mbereko's shoulder.

Ethan Szmagaj made it 2-0 with a shorthanded goal at the 15:14 mark after taking a pass from Bennett Schimek, then Dylan Jackson took a cross-ice pass from Ty Jackson and scored with 6.6 seconds remaining in the period.

Kyle Smolen put ASU's fourth goal on the board with a power-play tally at 5:05 of the third period. Mbereko stopped a shot by Artem Shlaine, but Smolen was on the doorstep and put home the rebound. Shlaine finished the contest with two assists.

Freshman Carsen Musser replaced Mbereko just over two minutes later and had four saves without giving up a goal.

Owen Beckner put the Tigers on the board with his fourth goal of the season at the 12:51 mark of the third period. Ty Gallagher took a shot from the top of the right circle that Pavicich got a glove on, but the puck snuck behind him and Beckner cleaned up the rebound on the goal line. Noah Laba collected his team-high 13th assist on the play.

Arizona State (14-8-1, 9-4-0 NCHC) outshot the Tigers, 29-25, and was 1-for-2 on the power play. The Tigers (11-11-1, 5-7-1) was 0-for-4 with a man advantage.

The teams will wrap up the season series on Saturday, Jan. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. (MT).
