19th-ranked Colorado College rallied from a 4-1 deficit and scored five goals in the third period to defeat No. 11 Arizona State, 5-4, Saturday evening at Mullett Arena.
Â
Noah Laba scored twice and
Max Burkholder added a goal and two assists as the Tigers improved to 12-11-1 overall and 6-7-1 in the NCHC, good for a sixth-place tie with Minnesota Duluth, just one point behind Denver and North Dakota.
Â
The Tigers scored five goals in a period for the first time since Oct. 13, 2023, a 7-3 victory over Union, and the first time in the third period since an 8-2 win over Western Michigan on Feb, 23, 2019.
Â
Ryan Kirwan put the Sun Devils on the board with a power-play goal 4:28 into the contest. Kirwan took a pass from Noah Beck and sent a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle past CC goaltender
Carsen Musser, who made his second career start and earned his first career victory.
Â
ASU (14-9-1, 9-5-0 NCHC) doubled the lead when Kirwan scored his second of the game just 1:53 into the second period. Charlie Schoen sent a cross-ice pass to Kirwan, who beat Musser from the top of the left circle.
Â
The Tigers put 16 shots on net in the second period, including seven during three power-play opportunities, but ASU goalie Gibson Homer (36 saves) stopped them all.
Â
Laba cut the deficit to one just 20 seconds into the third period when he took a pass from
Owen Beckner at the ASU blue line, raced down the right boards, around the net and placed a wraparound past Homer.
Â
Schoen put the Sun Devils back up by two at the 1:43 mark of the final frame. Artem Shlaine found Schoen all alone just to the left of Musser for his second assist of the contest and fourth of the weekend.
Â
Schoen made it 4-1 at the 6:17 mark, but Laba responded with his second of the game just seven seconds later after taking a centering pass from Burkholder.
Â
Chase McLane made it 4-3 at the 7:14 mark, putting home a rebound after Homer saved a shot from
Ty Gallagher, Burkholder collected his second assist of the contest on the play, then evened the game with a blast from the point after a scrum in front of the net at the 11:26 mark of the final frame.
Â
Drew Montgomery scored the game winner at the 14:37 mark, taking a beautiful pass from behind the net from
Gavin Lindberg and beating Homer for the fifth goal of the frame.
Â
The Tigers, who held on with Homer on the bench for the final 1:36 of the contest, outshot ASU, 41-36, and put 32 shots on net in the final two periods. Just like Friday night, the Sun Devils were 1-for-2 on the power play and CC was 0-for 4.
