Ruegg Reaches 1,000 Career Points, Tigers Down Gents

On Friday night, Colorado College men's basketball senior Scott Ruegg became the 23rd player to reach 1,000 career points. The Lafayette, Calif. Native led the Tigers with 21 points in a 101-72 victory over Centenary.

It's the first 100-point game for the Tigers since dropping 107 on Dec. 9, 2018, against Grinnell. Ruegg reached the Chiliad career mark with 6:15 remaining while driving to the basket and dropping in a layup despite contact, initiating the three-point play. Ruegg stood up and fist-pumped while getting mauled by his teammates in celebration.

"Scott has created a strong legacy of consistency and work ethic," head coach Jeff Conarroe said. "He has set the standard for this generation of Tiger basketball. What a great accomplishment that was well earned."

Ruegg finished with a season-high six three-pointers, two rebounds a block and a steal. Senior Asher Nofziger added his sixth double-double of the season with 22 points, 12 points, six assists, two blocks and a steal.

Devin Philio was the third Tiger in double-digits as he dropped 10 points, two rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.

12 Tigers scored in the win, including the bench that contributed 37 points, outsourcing Centenary's bench. CC had a season-high 27 assists, led by Ty Hendler, who dished a career-high 11 with his eight points, three rebounds, and a steal.

"We were connected tonight, shared the ball, and created for each other," Conarroe said. "It was amazing to see us reach that many assists."

CC shot 58.2 percent from the floor while limiting its opponents to 32.3 percent from the floor. Nofziger led all scorers with 11 points in the first half as the Tigers jumped to a 48-27 lead. CC started the game on a 21-4 run, holding Centenary to only one made field goal over the first 10 minutes of scrimmage.

The Tigers restricted the Gents to a 25.00 percent clip in the first half, giving up only seven made shots by the break.

In the second half, the Tigers made 23 shots and shot 63.89 percent from the floor. They dropped 53 points, led by Ruegg's 12 points, including three three-pointers.

CC never led its opponents to get within 22 points and led by as many as 37 points.

The Tigers outrebounded the Gents 46-35. Senior Adrian Price was second behind Nofziger with six rebounds and finished with six points.

"Thought we got a lot better defensively this week," Conarroe said. "We have been challenging our guys to re-establish our defensive identity in this program and compete on that end of the floor. It was a nice first step towards that, but the weekend is not complete until Sunday. Overall, it was a great night to be a Tiger; we are proud of the effort at home. It was nice to see."

CC moved up to third in the Blue Division of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and will face the second-place team of the University of the Ozarks on Sunday, Jan 26, at 3:30 pm MT.

On Friday night, the Eagles were defeated 76-52 by first-place St. Thomas. This will be the first-ever conference meeting between CC and Ozarks.
