After an overtime defeat last weekend, the Colorado College men's basketball team stood tall in OT against Austin College with a 79-74 victory in Sherman, Texas.
CC jumped ahead in OT with a
Scott Ruegg three-pointer with 3:11 remaining to make it 63-61. Ruegg drilled another crucial triple on the next play, drawing a foul to give the Tigers a six-point lead with the four-point play.
CC finished the game at the charity stripe for the remainder, converting 13 of 15 attempts from the free-throw line.
"The guys showed a lot of heart through a tremendous effort on the glass and on the defensive end of the floor," head coach
Jeff Conarroe said. "Austin played well and wouldn't go away. The guys made a lot of plays in OT on both ends. Just a gutsy win."
Ruegg finished the game with 12 points, seven of which came in OT.
Senior
Asher Nofziger had a historical night, tying the single-game program record of 19 rebounds while scoring 13 points for his seventh double-double. It's the second time this season Nofziger has recorded 19 rebounds, the only time in program a player has done so.
Devin Philio also had a career night on the glass, swiping 14 rebounds and leading the team with 14 points. This was his third double-double of the season.
Despite being outshot in the first half, the Tigers led 31-30 at halftime break. Sophomore
Gavin Carter led the CC scoring effort in the opening 20 minutes. The Cohasset, Mass., dropped six points and finished with eight, one rebound, and three assists.
The 'Roos took over the lead shortly in the second half, but Ruegg gave it back to CC with 16:09 left with another three-pointer. The lead exchanged hands twice more before the Tigers went on their biggest run of the evening and built the lead up to eight with 9:48 remaining.
Asher Nofziger scored six in the second half, including the jumper to put CC up 51-43 with 8:52 remaining—the biggest lead of the night.
Austin College battled back over the remaining eight minutes, cutting into the lead, and eventually tied it with 41 seconds remaining with a pair of free throws. AC managed to steal possession on the ensuing possession but missed the potential game-winning shot with three seconds left.
Ruegg's three-pointers put CC up in OT, and the Tigers clinched the win at the free-throw line.
CC improved to 9-9 (5-4 SCAC) and will look for the weekend sweep against the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas, on Sunday, Feb 2.
