A late goal from junior
Kendall Memoly in the 86th minute lifted the Colorado College women's soccer team over the University of Nevada 2-1 on Thursday night at Stewart Field.
Freshman
Sophia Mayne slipped a pass to Memoly, who snuck behind the box and was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Memoly found the left side of the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. CC (4-5-6) ended its two-game skid and got its first Mountain West win of the season.
"I think we started off really well in the first half and were happy to get that early goal," head coach
Keri Sanchez said. "We were pushing really hard for that second goal and wish it would have come a little bit earlier. It made for an exciting game for the fans but a little stressful on the sidelines."
In the 10th minute, senior
Makenna Kolson put CC up 1-0 after sophomore
Finley Schoenbeck put a corner kick onto the far post, where Kolson was waiting to head it in. The goal is the second of Kolson's career.
The Tigers put up a season-high 21 shots and held Nevada to just eight, the second-lowest total a team has accumulated all season against CC.
Junior
Tyler Rose and sophomores
Nadia Cassamajor and
Dayleigh Bos led the team with four shots each (two on net), Schoenbeck followed with three shots (one on goal) and Memoly added two shots, both of which were on target.
CC led 1-0 at the half after outshooting Nevada 11-5 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Tigers held the Wolf Pack to only three shots total. Junior goalkeeper
Regan Wallace faced only three shots and made two saves.
CC's offense kept pushing as Rose and Bos rifled off two shots on goal each before the 70th minute. Nevada, however, countered with its goal in the 77th minute when Olivia Loomis scored her second goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1.
The Wolf Pack were unable to get off another shot for the remaining 13 minutes while CC's offense fired off three more shots, including Memoly's game-winner.
Mayne fed a ball into the box where both Rose and Memoly were there. Rose was manned by a defender, while Memoly slipped free and found the back of the net to seal the 2-1 win.
It was Mayne's first career assist and Memoly's third game-winning goal of the season.
"It feels like we've been so close," Sanchez said on winning the close game. "The team has been working really hard to pull off a victory and tonight it bounced our way. I'm really happy they didn't drop their heads on the Nevada goal and kept pushing."
The Tigers will face UNLV on Sunday, Oct. 19th at noon on Senior Day to wrap up play at Stewart Field for the 2025 season.
