Tigers Battle To Draw With Lopes In Phoenix

The Colorado College women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with Grand Canyon University on Sunday, Oct. 26th in Phoenix, AZ. CC (5-6-6) was led by junior Kendall Memoly's four shots as it finished with 14 shots, including six on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Regan Wallace recorded five saves en route to her sixth shutout of the season.

"It was a tough battle today," head coach Keri Sanchez said.  "We felt like we did well to control parts of the game in both halves and created some good looks, but just couldn't get a goal. Our defense and keeper were strong inside our box, defending their crosses and limiting their shots. We are disappointed that we did not find a way to win.":

The Tigers outshot the Lopes 7-4 in the first half, putting four on net. Freshman Sophia Mayne recorded the first shot in the 6th minute in the center of the net that GCU goalkeeper Emma Knack saved.

Senior Gracie Huebner added her first shot four minutes later, but Knack also stopped it. Junior Tyler Rose and the offense kept peppering the defense. Rose collected her first shot in the 17th minute, but a save kept the game scoreless.

The final shot on goal of the half came from senior Emily Hitt in the 23rd minute. Memoly led all players with two shots at the half; the rest came from five different Tigers.

After the break, sophomore Dayleigh Bos aimed a shot at the new Lopes' goalkeeper, Taylor Gardner, from just outside the box, but Gardner made the stop.

Junior Nadia Cassamajor added the second shot-on-goal of the half in the 64th minute, which Gardner was able to save in the bottom left corner of the net.

The Lopes' offense took the rest of the shots for the remaining 26 minutes, three of which were on frame that Wallace saved.

GCU was called for offside nine times compared to CC's one. The Tigers took five corner kicks to the Lopes' four.

Mayne and Schoenbeck finished the game with two shots each, which was second on the team.

The Tigers will finish the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. MT against Air Force in the annual City For Champions Cup at Weidner Field. CC will look to defend its trophy after winning 2-1 last season.
