Tigers Take Down #10 UConn in Season Opener

Freshman Brayden Schuurman scored his first career goal and added an assist and Kaidan Mbereko had 27 saves to lead Colorado College to a 4-2 victory over 10th-ranked UConn in the season opener Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.

UConn jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Joey Muldowney scored just 52 seconds into the contest. Muldowney took a behind the back pass from Jake Richard and beat Mbereko from the slot.

The Tigers scored the equalizer when Owen Beckner, last season's leading scorer, notched a power-play goal with 30 seconds left in the period. UConn goalie Tyler Muszelik saved a shot by Schuurman from the right circle and Beckner was at the left circle with an open net. Drew Montgomery earned the second assist on the play.

After outshooting the Huskies 16-5 in the first period, CC, which was the first team out of the Top 20 in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls, scored twice in the first five minutes of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Schuurman scored his first career goal after taking a centering pass from Riley Stuart and cleanly beating Muszelik just 2:20 into the frame.

Philippe Blais-Savoie then made it 3-1 at the 4:56 mark when UConn turned the puck over in the Tiger zone and he blasted a one-timer past Muszelik for his third career game-winning goal.

The Huskies cut the lead back to one when Tabor Heaslip snuck a shot past Mbereko from the left side of the net at the 12:08 mark of the middle frame.

CC's defense was stellar the rest of the game, including killing a penalty after Ryan Koering was called for holding with 5:46 remaining in the third period. The Tigers, who wiped out all four of UConn's power plays, survived 36 seconds with Muszelik on the bench in favor of an extra skater before Klavs Veinbergs clinched it with an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining.

The Tigers outshot UConn, 38-29, and Muszelik finished with 34 saves.

The two teams will face off again on Saturday, Oct. 4, beginning at 6 p.m.
