Despite outshooting Omaha, 51-20, No. 15 Colorado College fell to the Mavericks, 3-2, in the NCHC opener for each team Friday night at Ed Robson Arena.
Tyler Rollwagen scored a pair of power-play goals and Simon Latkoczy stopped 49 shots for Omaha, which improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCHC.
The 51 shots are the most by a Colorado College team since Oct, 23, 2004, when the Tigers put up 52 against Quinnipiac in a 7-2 victory.
Colton Roberts notched a goal and an assist for the Tigers, who fell to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the NCHC.
The Tigers came out on fire, collecting 16 of the first 18 shots on goal, and held a 17-9 advantage following a scoreless first period.
The Mavericks (3-2, 1-0 NCHC) struck first with a power-play goal from Rollwagen just 32 seconds into the second period. Griffin Ludtke took a wrist shot from the right point that Rollwagen tipped right in front of CC goalie
Kaidan Mbereko and into the net.
The Tigers evened things up when Roberts scored the first goal of his career at 13:19 of the middle frame.
Connor Hvidston found
Riley Stuart along the boards and he sent a centering pass to Roberts, who beat Latkoczy from the slot.
Rollwagen scored his second power-play goal of the game with just 11.4 seconds remaining in the second period to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Luke Woodworth sent a pass from the right circle to Rollwagen, who turned at the near post and placed a shot past Mbereko.
With Mbereko on the bench late in the third period, Marcus Nguyen scored an empty-net goal with 1:48 remaining to make it 3-1, but the Tigers roared back as
Klavs Veinbergs cut the Omaha lead to 3-2 with an extra-attacker goal with 40 seconds remaining.
The Tigers got another two shots off against Latkoczy, but could not tie the game, despite outshooting Omaha, 22-4, in the final 20 minutes.
CC's
Brandon Lisowsky led all players Friday with 11 shots on goal, the most by a Tiger since Chris Wilkie had 13 against Miami on Jan. 11, 2020.
Mbereko finished with 17 saves and the Tigers were 0-for-4 on the power-play, while Omaha converted on two of its three man advantage situations.
The Teams will battle again on Saturday, Nov. 1, at Robson Arena, beginning at 6 p.m.
