The Colorado College men's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with the University of St. Thomas (TX) on Sunday afternoon in a battle between the first-place teams in the SCAC.
In Houston, TX, the Tigers outshot the Celts 5-4 but CC had only one shot on target compared to UST's two.
"The team competed very well today," head coach
Scott Palguta said. "Sunday afternoon games in Houston are always a challenge. We faced a strong opponent in hot and humid conditions, but the guys defended well, and the best chances to score belonged to us. It's been a long weekend, but we are proud of the resiliency the team showed over the two games."
Junior
Jack Hilliard led all players with two shots and played 81 minutes. Senior
Luke Stefanski had the lone shot on goal for the Tigers in the 58th minute.
Sophomore forward
Teddy Opler and freshman
Ewen Robertson were the other Tigers who tallied shots on the stat sheet.
Goalkeeper
Alex Wolter recorded his seventh shutout of the season, which leads the SCAC and is tied for second most in the nation.
The Connecticut native made two saves in his 90 minutes in the net.
CC's defense had one of its best games all year, holding the Celts to zero shots in the first half and only four in the second half.
Hilliard had the first two shots for the Tigers in the 7th and 16th minutes that were wide left and over the top of the goal. Robertson had his lone shot in the 29th minute that also went over the crossbar.
Tied 0-0 at the half, UST's offense picked up in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 4-2. Wolter saved both shots on target, the first being in the 47th minute.
CC's lone shot on target came from Stefanski in about 12 minutes into the second half, but Molina Gonzalez saved it.
The Celts tried to put one more on net in the 88th minute when Aldo Hernandez took his only shot of the day, but Wolter was able to make the save.
CC held on to the shutout but had to settle for a 0-0 draw, moving to 6-0-4 on the year and 3-0-1 in conference play.
The Tigers are unbeaten through the first 10 games of the season and will return home to host Texas Lutheran at Stewart Field next Friday at 4:30 p.m.
