Tigers Edge Out Loggers

Colorado College edged out the University of Puget Sound 59-54 in the first game of the Ken Schumann Classic in Forest Grove, Ore.

CC (3-1) extended its winning streak to three straight games after utilizing an explosive third quarter to down the Loggers.

Junior guard Isa Nelson led all Tigers with 14 points, three rebounds, and went 6-8 from the free throw line.

JuJu Garcia followed with 12 points, four rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Addie Meyer matched her career high of nine rebounds and finished with five points, an assist and a block.

After shooting 24.08 percent in the first half, CC scored 21 points in the third quarter and made eight of ten free throws after trailing 28-20 at the halftime break. The Tigers held the Loggers to 29.41 percent from the floor in the third quarter after they shot 43.75 percent in the second quarter.

Nelson and Garcia each scored five points in the third to lead the team. Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter; the Tigers cut the lead down to 40-39 with 1:09 remaining after Avery Johnson converted on a layup. Nelson then made two free throws with 38 seconds left to give CC a 41-40 lead.

The Tigers didn't surrender the lead for the rest of the game. Meyer made a lay-up for the first basket of the fourth quarter to make it 43-40. Garcia drilled a three-pointer a minute later to give CC its most significant lead of the night at 46-40.

CC held UPS to 33.33 percent from the floor in the fourth while the Tigers made seven free throws in the final minutes to seal the 59-54 victory.

"We got contributions from so many different places," head coach Katherine Auguste said. "Addie's rebounds, Isa's scoring and leadership, Payton's tough defense and key 3's, and Andie's assists. Avery's two go-ahead free throws down the stretch were huge as well. I'm happy with how our team battled throughout the contest and think the steadiness we showed in adversity will come to benefit us in the long term this season."

They will wrap up the weekend against host school Pacific tomorrow, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. MT.
