Wilson Björck scored 50 seconds into overtime Saturday night to lead Colorado College past #4 Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, at Ed Robson Arena.
Björck took a drop pass from
Owen Beckner at the top of the right circle, moved towards the net and went top shelf to beat UMD goalie Adam Gajan and deliver two big points for the Tigers in the NCHC standings.
CC snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 7-6-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the NCHC, while the Bulldogs fell to 12-4-0 overall and 5-3-0 in league play.
Kaidan Mbereko finished with 29 saves and collected the secondary assist, his second of the season and career, on the game winner.
Following a scoreless first period, the Tigers found themselves down to just five defensemen when
Matteo Mann was whistled for a 5-minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head at the 5:49 mark of the middle frame. After the referees reviewed a possible goal by Mann, a UMD coach's challenge prompted a second review for the penalty.
UMD was called for a penalty midway through the 5-minute power play and CC killed off the remaining time.
Scout Truman opened the scoring when he tipped in a shot from the right point by Kyle Gaffney at the 11:22 mark of the second period during a delayed penalty.
Gavin Lindberg evened the game at the 2:54 mark of the third period with his second goal in as many games. He intercepted a pass just inside the UMD blue line and beat Gajan (38 saves) with a wrister from the top of the right circle.
CC outshot the Bulldogs 14-8 in the third period, but neither team found the net, setting up Björck's dramatic winner.
The Tigers held a 40-30 shot advantage for the game, the fourth time CC had at least 40 shots this season, and each team was 0-for-1 on the power play.
The Tigers return to action next weekend with a non-conference series against Providence, Nov. 28-29, at Robson Arena.
