A dominating second half propelled Colorado College over Whitman College 53-39 in the finale of the Colorado College Fall Classic.
The Tigers shot 52.3 percent from the floor, including 41.7 percent from long range, in the third and fourth quarters after a slow start.
CC shot 2-15 from deep in the opening half, but rallied to outscore the Blues 33-19 in the second half. Freshman
Rayna Welsch led the team with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists and a career high three steals.
Junior
JuJu Garcia scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half. She made three of five three pointers to lead the Tigers' scoring efforts.
The CC defense had one of its best games in recent memory. The Tigers held the Blues to 23.7 percent shooting and only 15.4 (2-13) from three-point range.
It was a 20-20 tie at the halftime break. In the third quarter, CC shot 54.5 percent from the floor and went on a 11-0 run over the first five minutes to take a 31-20 lead. The Blues responded with a mini run of their own to make it 31-26 with 1:44 left in the quarter.
Garcia drilled a critical three-pointer to end the run and extend the Tigers' lead to eight points. Whitman made one more shot to cut CC's advantage to 34-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, both teams exchanged buckets before Welsch converted on a shot inside the paint followed by a
Isa Nelson three-pointer to build the lead to nine points (41-32) with 6:46 remaining.
CC outscored Whitman 12-7 the rest of the way highlighted by multiple Garcia three pointers to slam the door on a potential Blues' comeback.
The Tigers had their best quarter in the fourth, converting 50 of their attempts from the floor and holding the Blues to 26.7 percent to close out the game.
They cruised to the eventual 53-39 victory to improve to 4-3 on the year. CC is back in action on Dec. 13 to start conference play against St. Thomas at Reid Arena.
