The Colorado College men's basketball team fell short against Schreiner 71-69 as the Mountaineers hit the game-winning shot as time expired in a wire-to-wire matchup inside Reid Arena.
CC forced 17 turnovers, and 10 Tigers tallied points on the scoresheet. Senior
Scott Ruegg drilled a jumper to tie the game up 69-69 with 17 seconds remaining. With no time on the shot clock, Schreiner's CJ Ward battled his way into the paint and laid the game-winner off the glass and in as time expired.
The Tigers (13-11, 9-6 SCAC) outrebounded the Mountaineers (19-5, 12-3 SCAC) 41-36. Senior
Devin Philio led the offensive charge with 14 points, seven rebounds, an assist, three blocks and three steals. Sophomore
Ty Hendler added 10 points, a career-high eight rebounds, four assists and a steal.
CC had 23 points off turnovers compared to SU's 13. The home team led most of the first half after
Asher Nofziger scored the opening bucket, and the Tigers proceeded to open the game on a 12-3 run in the first five minutes.
Both teams shot the ball subpar in the opening frame. CC held Schreiner to only 36.67 percent from the floor, but the Tigers made only 33.33 percent of their shots in the opening half.
An offensive board and tip-in by Hendler with 6:40 remaining in the half made it 28-23, the biggest lead of the day for CC.
Schreiner took over the lead with 2:06 remaining, but a three-pointer by
Orion Samikoglu gave CC a 31-29 advantage at the break.
In the second, there were nine lead changes. Schreiner led by as many as nine points with 10:37 remaining, but a 12-2 run by the Tigers over the next five minutes tied the game up at 56-56 with 5:25 left in the game.
Ruegg briefly gave CC the lead with under three minutes remaining, but the Mountaineers climbed back out in front with 1:58 left and didn't surrender the lead for the remainder of the game.
A Philio jumper managed to tie the game at 67-67 with 1:15 remaining, but SU scored on the ensuing possession to go back up by two. Ruegg drilled a jumper at the free throw line with 17 seconds left to tie the game up again. SU called a timeout and scored at the buzzer to win 71-69.
CC will wrap up the regular season against No. 24 Trinity on Sunday to celebrate Senior Day at 2 pm MT.
