Klavs Veinbergs scored two power-play goals and added an assist to lead No. 20 Colorado College to a 6-4 victory over No. 16 North Dakota Friday night in Grand Forks, N.D.
Â
The victory marked CC's fifth straight over North Dakota for just the second time in the storied history of this rivalry. The Tigers, who swept all four games in the series last season, improved to 14-12-1 overall and 8-8-1 in the NCHC and moved to within one point of the Fighting Hawks, who fell to 14-10-2 overall and 8-6-1 in league play.
Â
Veinbergs, who posted his first career multi-goal game, put the Tigers up 1-0 with a power-play goal at the 8:02 mark of the first period.
Max Burkholder found
Gavin Lindberg behind the net and Lindberg fed Veinbergs on the doorstep and he beat UND goaltender Hobie Hedquist.
Â
North Dakota evened things up late in the first period when Jayden Perron took a one-timer from the left circle that CC netminder
Kaidan Mbereko got a piece of but the puck snuck behind him with 21.6 seconds remaining in the frame.
Â
Dylan James put the Fighting Hawks ahead 2-1 with a rebound goal just 3:03 into the second period, but
Gleb Veremyev made it 2-2 with his team-high eighth goal of the season at 16:45 of the middle frame. Veremyev took a drop pass from
Bret Link and fired a wrist shot that cleanly beat Hedquist stick side from the right circle. Veinbergs started the play with a cross-ice pass to Link.
Â
Veinbergs notched his second goal of the game at the 12:35 mark of the third period with a rocket from the right circle, then team captain
Stanley Cooley scored 14 seconds later and all of a sudden it was 4-2.
Â
North Dakota coach Brad Berry pulled Hedquist with five minutes remaining in the third period and it paid off as Jake Livanavage scored at the 15:08 mark and it was a one-goal game once again.
Â
CC's leading scorer,
Noah Laba, deposited the game-winner with three minutes remaining when he deflected
Ty Gallagher's shot past Hedquist for his eighth of the season.
Â
James scored his second of the contest with 1:25 remaining, once against with Hedquist on the bench, but Gallagher was credited with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds remaining when a UND player sent the puck the length of the ice into their own net.
Â
CC outshot the Fighting Hawks, 25-22, and was 2-for-5 on the power play, just the third time this season with two power-play goals. Hedquist finished the game with 19 saves, while Mbereko had 18. UND did not score on its two power-play opportunities.
Â
The teams will battle again on Saturday, Feb. 8, beginning at 6 p.m. (CT). Â
