CC Falls To Trinity In SCAC Semifinals

The Colorado College men's basketball team fell to Trinity 67-50 in the semifinals of the SCAC Tournament on Saturday evening. The Tigers (14-13) had overcome a slow offensive start in the first half but couldn't complete the comeback.

Sophomore Gavin Carter led the team with 15 points and finished shooting 85.7 percent (6-7) from the floor, including 2-2 from long range.

CC held Trinity to only 27.78 percent from the floor in the first half, but TU made eight first-half free throws to pull ahead in what was a defensively strong game to start.

The Tigers outshot Trinity in the opening half, led by Carter, who had seven points.

TU jumped out to a 9-2 lead, but CC battled back with a Carter jumper with 8:15 remaining to make it 11-10 TU. Trinity responded with a run of their own, managed to build the lead up to double-digits, and led 31-19 at the halftime break.

CC trailed by as many as 19 after another flurry by Trinity, but a fastbreak steal and layup by Scott Ruegg and another jumper by Garter made it 47-36 with 10:38 in the game.

The Tigers kept the lead at 11 for the next four minutes, but TU made an additional 11 free throws in the second half and pulled ahead late in the game.

CC shot 44 percent in the second half compared to 32 percent from the first half, however, Trinity also had a more productive second half offensively as the Tigers could not come back and ultimately fell 67-50.

Senior Asher Nofziger finished with nine points, three rebounds and an assist. Ruegg added five points, a rebound, an assist and a steal. Devin Philio tied his career high of four steals and grabbed six rebounds along with his four points, an assist and two blocks.

The Tigers ended the season with 14 wins and completed their first set of back-to-back winning seasons since 2013.
