No. 17 Tigers Land Eagles In WIAC Battle

No. 17 Colorado College extended its winning streak to eight straight games after downing the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse by a final score of 16-5 on Friday evening. The Tigers are 7-0 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play and are 4-1 on the road. In a battle between the top two teams in the WIAC, CC had four players record a hat trick.

"We had a sluggish start to the game but found some momentum in the second quarter as we took more control on the draw and made good on more of our offensive possessions," head coach Susan Stuart said. "Second half, the defense went into high to a high-pressure set that stifled any flow for La Crosse. I am proud of the team's turnaround and finding the ability to control the tempo for the rest of the game."

Senior Peyton Murphy led the team with four goals. Sophomores Meilani Molina, Sofia Mancino and Junior Grace Bean all recorded hat tricks as the Tigers outshot the Eagles 27-22, including 22-12 shots on goal.

CC led 4-2 at the end of the first after Molina scored the first two CC goals. Senior Healy Bledsoe made it 3-1 Tigers with 7:47 remaining in the quarter before the Eagles responded with their second goal. Mancino scored on a woman-up opportunity with 46 seconds left.

The Tigers' offense exploded in the second, scoring six unanswered goals as they outshot La Crosse 11-4. Bean and Mancino each had two goals as Molina and Tobin Lonergan also found the back of the net to give CC a 10-2 lead at the halftime break.

In the third, only three goals were scored as Bean and Murphy increased the lead to a nine-goal advantage as the fourth quarter arrived. Murphy continued her scoring streak, finding the back of the net three consecutive times. Kelsey Shankle scored with 10:25 left to make it 15-3.

Murphy scored her fourth goal with 5:06 remaining to round out the scoring for the Tigers as they rolled to the eventual 16-5 victory.

It's the seventh consecutive game that CC has scored 16 or more goals as the team is first in the WIAC in goals per game.

The Tigers will battle UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wis., on Sunday at 9 a.m. MT before driving to Minneapolis, Minn., to face Augsburg University a few hours later at 2 p.m. MT.
