The No. 20 Colorado College men's soccer team tied Wheaton College, 2-2, Saturday night in a back-and-forth affair on the second day of the Bob Baptista Invitational in the suburbs of Chicago.
"We were our own worst enemy in the first half, but we put together a very good second half and deserved the equalizing goal," head coach
Scott Palguta said. We got terrific contributions from our young guys. We are learning and growing every day, but I remain optimistic about the potential of our team."
Junior midfielder
Jack Hilliard and freshman
Ewen Robertson supplied CC's goals. Robertson, a Concord, Mass. native, has scored in each of his first two career games.
Wheaton took the lead in the 20th minute after intercepting a CC pass and firing a well-placed shot into the bottom left corner of goalkeeper
Alex Wolter's goal. The Tigers responded just three minutes later, when senior captain
Rex Karjian found Hilliard at the top of the box, who put a low shot past Wheaton's keeper.
Karjian has three points through the first two games after scoring a goal in the season opener.
Five minutes later, Wheaton won a free kick at the top of CC's box and scored the rebound after Wolter deflected it.
Wheaton outshot CC 7-5 in the first half. Hilliard led the team with two shots as it stood 2-1 at the break.
The scoreline stood until the 77th minute, when CC found the back of the net again after Senior
Luke Stefanski played a low ball across the box that Robertson finished one-time with ease.
CC outshot Wheaton 14-12, and the referee dished out a total of seven yellow cards (four for Wheaton, three for CC).
Robertson, along with Hilliard, led the team with a career-high three shots.
The Tigers are now 1-0-1 on the season after beating DePauw 3-0 on Friday.
They'll play their home opener against Whitman College next Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Stewart Field.
