No. 20 Tigers Draw Even With Whitman

The Colorado College men's soccer team collected its second consecutive draw with a 2-2 tie against Whitman College Thursday afternoon at Stewart Field.

The Tigers dominated the play early and Teddy Opler opened the scoring just 2:32 into the contest. Rex Karjian took a long pass from Dylan Stapley down the left side, beat a Whitman defender into the box and sent a perfect crossing pass to Opler, who hit the open net for his second goal of the season.

William Miranda-Ortiz evened the score for Whitman with 6:30 remaining in the first half. The Blues intercepted a CC pass near midfield and Riki Kobayashi found Miranda-Ortiz, who took a touch off his shoulder and one-timed a shot past Tiger goalie Spencer Besselaar.

Both teams had good looks in the first 45 minutes, with CC holding a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.

The Tigers (1-0-2) had a golden look in the second minute of the second half. Karjian took a free kick from 35 yards out that Ewen Robertson kicked across the goal mouth, but Jack Hilliard missed an open net wide right.

Robertson broke the deadlock with his third goal of the season in the 67th minute. Zeke Lubin started the play by forcing a Whitman turnover at midfield and finding Wyatt Linggi upfield. Linggi returned the ball to Lubin, who found Robertson at the top of the box and he fired a shot past Whitman keeper Niclas Isensee.

The Blues (0-0-2) made it 2-2 with just 2:10 remaining in the contest. Takahiro Hikida sent a free kick from the near corner that Pablo Gonzalez, Jr., buried with a header by the far post.

The Tigers finished the game with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal, led by Whit Hynes with three. Bessalaar had three saves, while Isensee finished with six.

Colorado College continues its 75th anniversary weekend against Cal Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 5, beginning at 7 p.m.
