No. 20 Tigers Blank CLU For First Home Win

No. 20 Colorado College shut out California Lutheran University 2-0 on Friday at Stewart Field. Freshman Ewen Robertson and junior Dylan Stapley both scored in the first half while junior goalkeeper Alex Wolter made two saves in his second shutout of the year.

"I thought we showed much more maturity tonight than last night against Whitman," head coach Scott Palguta said.  "We started and closed each half with more intensity and great accountability.  Our defensive structure was much sounder in the second half tonight.  We are learning and growing every day, but we are moving in the right direction."

CC (2-0-2) outshot CLU 12-6, including 7-2 shots on goal. Robertson logged a career and team-high five shots (two on target) and scored his fourth career goal, one for as many games he's played in during his young career.

The Tigers struck early for the second night in a row when, in the fourth minute, the offense broke through the CLU defense. Luke Stefanski fed a ball from the right side of the box to an awaiting Robertson, who tapped the ball with his right foot to the bottom left corner of the net.

Stefanski leads the team with three assists after he recorded two in the first two games.

40 minutes passed with the same score until CC had numerous corner kicks opportunities before the end of the half. Sophomore Jamie McFarland was in the corner delivering the ball into the box. With seconds left in the half, McFarland laced a ball to the far post where Stapley was waiting at the left post to put CC up 2-0 in the 45th minute.

It's McFarland's first career point after missing all of last season. He got his first career start last night against Whitman.

In the second half, the Tigers kept the pressure on, outshooting CLU 8-3, including only one shot on goal.

Senior Rex Karjian and sophomore Teddy Opler had consecutive shots on goal in the 55th minute, but both were saved.

Freshman Jack Purvis made his collegiate debut and nearly had his first career goal after almost backheeling a shot into the back of the net in the 85th minute, but it was saved.

CC rode the rest of the time to the 2-0 victory. The Tigers will close out the weekend on Sunday against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 12:30 p.m. MT.
