Two first-half penalties lifted Kansas State over the Colorado College Tigers by a final score of 3-1 on Thursday evening in Manhattan.
Despite a second-half goal by
Jessica Anderson, CC fell short after the Wildcats converted on the early penalty kicks. Anderson headed the ball into the back of the net in the 75th minute after
Kylie Smith sent in the corner kick. It's Anderson's second-career goal and also her first-ever goal on her birthday.
CC put 16 shots on the box score, with four being on net. Kansas State had a strong offensive outing, producing 22 shots with 12 on goal. Sophomore midfielder
Finley Schoenbeck led the team with four shots, one SOG and played all 90 minutes.
Smith recorded her second consecutive assist and her second point of the season with the beautiful ball to Anderson from the corner. The Tigers finished the game with seven corners compared to KSU's four.
The Wildcats were awarded a penalty in the 19th minute after drawing a foul inside the CC box. Allison Marshall converted to give them the early 1-0 lead. KSU then got another penalty after the Tigers were called for a handball inside their box, and Andra Mohler made it 2-0 with the PK.
CC trailed 2-0 at the half, but came out of the break producing KSU 10 shots to eight. However, KSU increased its lead to 3-0 in the 55th minute.
Schoenbeck and
Emma Smith responded with two shots on net in the 56th minute that were both saved. Both teams produced shots over the next 20 minutes, but the ensuing shot on target was Anderson's goal in the 75th minute to get CC on the board.
The Tigers kept pressuring but were unable to find the back of the net again for the remaining 15 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper
Skye Pratt made her collegiate debut after replacing
Regan Wallace in the 57th minute. Pratt made her first career save in the 84th minute. Wallace finished with seven saves.
CC has next week off before traveling to Albuquerque to take on the University of New Mexico on Thursday, Sept. 25th.
