Tigers Fall to UNM In Final Minutes

New Mexico's Gabby Beaudry scored in the 89th minute to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Lobos to a 3-2 victory over Colorado College Thursday night in the Mountain West women's soccer opener in Albuquerque, N.M.

Sophomore Finley Schoenbeck and senior Makenna Kolson scored for CC and junior Regan Wallace had a couple of outstanding saves for the Tigers, who are now 3-4-2 overall and 0-1 in the MW.

It looked like the Lobos scored first in the seventh minute, but after an official review, the goal was waved off as the play was ruled offside.

The Tigers took advantage as Schoenbeck notched her first goal of the season in the 10th minute to open the scoring. Freshman Taylor Mentink sent the ball into the box from the right side and the ball rolled through the box to Schoenbeck at the far post and she beat UNM goalie Alyson Campbell. Mentink collected her first career point with the assist.

New Mexico's Alejandra Puerta evened the score in the 58th minute with the first of her two goals with a shot from the left side of the box that eluded Wallace.

The Tigers roared back and took the lead right back in the 63rd minute when Kolson scored the first goal of her career. She took a pass from freshman Pressly Taylor at the top of the box and placed a left-footed shot cleanly past Campbell, giving Taylor the first point of her career.

However, Puerta tied the score again just three minutes later, taking an over the top pass from Allie Anderson and beating Wallace from inside the box.

In the final minutes, Anderson sent a cross into the box that Beaudry headed past Wallace for the game winner.

New Mexico (5-2-2, 1-0) held a 14-12 advantage in total shots and had seven shots on goal, compared to six for CC. Wallace and Campbell each finished with four saves.

"This was a tough loss," head coach Keri Sanchez said. "We battled, had the lead twice, but couldn't withstand their pressure consistently at the end. We learned that the little things can be the difference on both ends of the field."

The Tigers remain on the road for a game at San Diego State on Sunday, Sept. 28, beginning at 12 p.m., PT.
