Bret Link and
Connor Hvidston each collected a goal and an assist for Colorado College Friday night, but Augustana scored a shorthanded breakaway goal early in the third period to give the Vikings a 3-2 victory in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Augustana's Colton Friesen opened the scoring 4:54 into the contest. Friesen took a pass from Callum Gau in front of the net, turned and put a backhander past CC goaltender
Kaidan Mbereko from the doorstep.
Link tied things up with his fifth goal of the season at the 17:28 mark of the first period. Hvidston sent the puck across the crease in front of Viking goalie Christian Manz and an Augustana defenseman had a beat on the puck, but Link lifted his stick and put the puck in the net before Manz could recover.
Fisher Scott also collected an assist on the play.
Hvidston gave the Tigers (8-8-3) a 2-1 lead with his second goal of the season at the 5:24 mark of the second period.
Drew Montgomery's one-timer from the left circle caromed off the back boards right to Hvidston, who found the open net from the opposite side, marking the first multi-point game of his career.
The Vikings (11-6-3) drew even at 8:47 of the middle frame when Brett Meerman put a rebound past Mbereko on the power play, then Cole Burtch notched the game-winner with a shorthanded breakaway goal 1:24 into the third period.
Mbereko, who finished with 25 saves, was off the ice in favor of an extra attacker for much of the final two minutes, but the Tigers could not get the equalizer.
Manz finished with 29 saves as the Tigers owned a 31-28 advantage in shots.
The team will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday, Jan. 3, beginning at 6 pm. (CT).
