Tigers Return to NCHC Action at Omaha

The Colorado College Tigers return to action in the NCHC with a weekend series against the Omaha Mavericks, Jan. 23-24, at Baxter Arena. 87 Years of Tiger Hockey
This season marks the 87th year of varsity ice hockey at Colorado College and 13th season as a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. CC was a charter member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (1951-52) for 62 seasons before joining the NCHC with seven other schools prior to the 2013-14 campaign.

Last Time Out
Gavin Lindberg and Connor Hvidston each collected two goals and an assist and Bret Link scored twice to lead Colorado College to an 8-3 victory over Simon Fraser University in an exhibition game Saturday at Ed Robson Arena. Philippe Blais-Savoie, Tomas Mrsic and Brayden Schuurman had two assists apiece for the Tigers. Lindberg opened the scoring at the 7:02 mark of the opening period when he took a centering pass from Owen Beckner and fired a one timer from the slot past SFU goalie Jesse Makaj. Link made it 2-0 with a power-play goal with 1:41 remaining in the opening frame. His shot from the slot hit Makaj but snuck past him into the net. Wilson Bjorck and Blais-Savoie each collected an assist on the play. Beckner scored 3:52 into the second period to make it 3-0, but Simon Fraser scored the next two to cut the deficit to one. Following Ridge Dawson's goal at the 13:06 mark, Hvidston scored just nine seconds later to make it 4-2. Link scored his second of the game at the 16:16 mark, then Hvidston notched his at the 17:11 mark to make it 6-2. Lindberg collected his second of the contest just 1:46 into the third period for a 7-2 advantage. Matteo Speranza scored for SFU with 3:19 remaining and Merril Steenari tallied the final goal with 0.2 seconds left. The Tigers out SFU, 49-11, and were 2-for-4 on the power play. Jackson Unger had seven saves for CC, while Beckham Dempsey had one as he played the final 4:38 ... Prior to the exhibition game, the TIgers spilt a pair of games with No. 4 North Dakota, Jan. 9-10, at Robson Arena. Blais-Savoie scored two minutes into overtime to give CC a 3-2 victory on Friday, Jan. 9. Drew Montgomery and Ryan Alexander also scored, while Kaidan Mbereko was spectacular with a season-high 37 saves, including 28 in the second and third periods combined. On Saturday, the Fighting Hawks captured a 5-2 victory. Mats Lindgren, who joined the program over winter break, scored the first two goals of his career.

The Coaches 
Kris Mayotte is in his fifth season at the helm of the Tigers. He came to Colorado College after serving two years as an assistant coach at the University of Michigan, and was an assistant coach for Providence College when the Friars won the NCAA Division I title in 2015. Mayotte was the NCHC Coach of the Year following the 2023-24 campaign … Mike Gabinet is in his ninth season as head coach at Omaha after serving as the team's associate head coach during the 2016-17 season. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in 2015-16.

Previous Meetings
The Tigers and Omaha have met 56 times, with the Mavericks holding a 34-15-7 advantage in the series, including an 18-5-5 mark in Omaha. The Mavericks have won six straight games in the series, including two earlier this season at Robson Arena.  

Lindgren Named NCHC Rookie of the Week
Mats Lindgren was named the KJ Branding NCHC Rookie of the Week following the North Dakota series, Jan. 9-10. Despite only playing in his third and fourth games for the Tigers since joining the team during winter break, the Buffalo Sabres draft pick totaled three points from the blue line, including his first two collegiate goals. In Friday's opener, he assisted on CC's game-winning goal in overtime in a 3-2 victory. The next night, he scored both of the Tigers' goals in a 5-2 defeat.
  
Björck Wins Gold at World Junior Championship  
Freshman Wilson Björck won a gold medal with Team Sweden at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. Team Sweden defeated Czechia, 4-2, in the final Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Björck is the third Colorado College player to win gold at the World Junior Championship, joining Mark Stuart (team caotain) and Brett Sterling, who helped Team USA win its first title in 2004. The winger appeared in three games for Team Sweden during the '26 tournament, including the 4-3 overtime semifinal victory over Finland and the final.

Mats Lindgren Added to 2025-26 Roster  
Defenseman Mats Lindgren has been added to the 2025-26 roster, effective immediately. Lindgren, a fourth-round pick (#106 overall) by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2022 NHL Draft from North Vancouver, B.C., most recently played during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring 21 points (7g,14a) in 56 games for the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL and appearing in seven games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Prior to that, he played five seasons in the WHL between the Kamloops Blazers and Red Deer Rebels, collecting 129 points (24g,105a) in 220 games.

Tiger Tales  
The Tigers are 11th in the country with 33.7 shots per game and 17th with 742 shots on goal ... They lead the NCHC and are third in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (54.9%) ... Klavs Veinbergs is second in the NCHC with 277 faceoff wins and a 61.0 faceoff win percentage ... Tomas Mrsic is tied for 16th in the NCHC with 67 shots and Brandon Lisowsky is tied for 18th with 66 ... With his game-winning goal on Jan. 9, Philippe Blais-Savoie has four GWG in his career, second on the team behind Drew Montgomery's five ... Nine of CC's last 12 games have either been a one-goal result or a tie.

Most NHL Draft Picks on Roster in Program History
With the addition of Mats Lindgren, the 2025-26 roster has 10 players that have been drafted by the NHL. That ties for the most on a roster in program history, joining the 2003-04 and '04-05 rosters. 

Oh Brother
Freshmen Tomas and Mateo Mrsic are the 21st set of brothers to play hockey together at Colorado College and the first since Cody (2012-16) and Trey Bradley (2015-19) during the 2015-16 season. Other prominent brothers to lace their skates up at the same time in Colorado Springs include the only two NHL first-round draft picks from CC, Jaden (St. Louis, 2010) and Rylan Schwartz played together from 2010-12, while Mark Stuart (Boston, 2003) played two years with each of his older brothers, Mike from 2000-02 and Colin from 2002-04. Marty Sertich, the 2005 Hobey Baker winner, and his brother, Mike, played together at CC during the '04-05 campaign.

Colorado College was picked fifth in the 2025-26 NCHC Preseason Poll.

CC to Have 15 Games Televised This Season 
Colorado College announced that 15 games will be broadcast live on television this season, including 12 games by partner SOCO CW. SOCO CW is available to viewers throughout Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Southern Colorado. In addition, KRDO-13 (ABC) in Colorado Springs will televise two games. 

Season Five at Robson Arena
Never in the storied 80-plus years history of Colorado College Tiger Hockey had the team played its home games on campus. Thanks to the generosity of donors, including former CC hockey player Ed Robson '54 the school's Board of Trustees, that changed on October 8, 2021, when the Tigers and St. Lawrence battled in the first regular-season game at Ed Robson Arena. Colorado College was one of nine Division I teams to surpass capacity on a per game basis last season at 106.7 percent. The capacity of Robson Arena is 3,407 and CC averaged an attendance of 3,634 in its 17 home games.
