The Tigers split a pair of 3-1 decisions at Omaha last weekend ... On Friday, Trevor Wong scored twice to lead Omaha to a 3-1 victory, while
Philippe Blais-Savoie scored and
Kaidan Mbereko collected 20 saves for CC. It appeared the Tigers scored first at the 7:41 mark of the first period when
Ryan Alexander put the puck in the net, but the play was ruled offside following an Omaha challenge and official review. Another review occurred with 44.5 seconds remaining in the opening frame after an Omaha player put the puck in the net after Mbereko had covered it and the whistle blew. The call of no goal on the ice was confirmed with the review. Omaha struck first with a power-play goal at the 12:16 mark of the second period. Aidan de la Gorgendiere took a shot from the point that deflected off a CC player's stick in front of the net and found its way past Mbereko. The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead at the 4:46 mark of the third period when Wong deflected a shot from the left boards by Griffin Luedtke that snuck past Mbereko. Blais-Savoie put the Tigers on the board with 4:32 remaining in regulation when he took a pass from Wilson Björck and fired a wrist shot from the left point that eluded Omaha goalie Simon Latkoczy.
Klavs Veinbergs also collected an assist on the play. Mbereko exited the ice in favor of an extra skater with 2:10 left in the third period and Wong scored into the open net with 40.1 seconds remaining ... On Saturday,
Connor Hvidston and
Drew Montgomery each collected a goal and an assist and Mbereko made 30 saves in a 3-1 victory. Omaha put the first goal on the board just seconds after the Tigers killed off a power play. Brett Hyland to a centering pass from Wong and beat Mbereko from the slot at the 12:04 mark of the first period. Mbereko came up with some outstanding saves in the first 20 minutes as Omaha held a 21-8 shot advantage after the opening frame. The senior from Aspen, Colo., had 12 of his 20 first-period saves come during three Omaha power plays. The Tigers turned the tide in the second period, outshooting Omaha, 16-4, and outscoring the Mavericks, 2-0.
Klavs Veinbergs evened things up with a power-play goal, his team-high seventh of the season, at the 6:49 mark of the period.
Mats Lindgren sent his own rebound shot towards the net from the slot and it deflected off Veinbergs in front past Latkoczy. The officials reviewed the play for goaltender interference, but the call was upheld. Hvidston, who assisted on Veinbergs goal, put the Tigers ahead at the 15:58 mark after taking a pass from Montgomery, flying down the right side and firing a wrister from the right circle that cleanly beat Latkoczy, giving Hvidston his second multi-point game of his career. The Tiger defense stifled Omaha the rest of the middle period and all of the third and Montgomery gave CC an insurance goal with an empty-netter with 52.3 seconds left.
